Facebook Uses Robots to Boost AI Research

https://ift.tt/30bOfdn

Facebook has turned into a multi-billion company in a few years. What started as a means to stay connected with friends, colleagues, and relatives has now transformed into a platform where you not only socialize but also sell products and services. The incredible journey of this social media website includes many achievements, and one of them is the introduction of robots to help its AI research team. Aside from Facebook, most high-tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Nvidia are using robots to explore their avenues when it comes to AI research. However, Facebook’s robot is still under experimentation.

What the robot will do

Franziska Meier, Facebook’s AI research scientist, says that they want to make the robot work like a human. They are trying to program it to become more curious on their own. He believes that that’s how humans learn manipulating objects. For example, children are always interested to know about their world. Similarly, the robot will try to be curious to know about things that he is programmed to find out.

Programming the robot correctly is very crucial in this context. For example, A2Z Advanced Solutions LTD has come up with robots that can defuse bombs, and they also have products like military robots and fire-fighting unmanned robots. The CEO, Bentsur Joseph, says that programming the robots entails unimaginable levels of accuracy. They have successfully defused bombs in the trials and have already helped the military forces in a few dangerous situations.

Cautious approach

The AI research team of Facebook thinks that Brett, the robot, is slowly making progress in targeting things that it needs to know. It resets after every lesson, meaning the information it goes through is stored in its memory forever. This journey is almost like a baby growing up, but the parents don’t have to reward the robots for achieving the daily goal.

The learning phase involves a three-fold path starting with the robot to teach itself about how to go about with the trial and error process. To make the robot a perfectionist, the research scientists are giving the robot various random search terms that may or may not relate to Facebook users. The robot will have to identify which ones to use and which ones to ignore. This requires time, and that’s why the trial and error method follows.

Secondly, the notion of curiosity will work in the robot. Once it identifies the related terms, it will automatically start learning more about similar searches. This is where it will help the AI team. When it combines with artificial intelligence, it will also refine the search-terms more efficiently. Lastly, the robot will also have a sense of touch so that it can perform simple tasks like picking up a bottle or rolling a ball.

However, the scientists have not confirmed about the start of robotics yet. It is still under the experimentation phase. But, you can expect a confirmation in a few years regarding the successful usage of robotics in your favorite social media website.
