Facebook bans far right ‘Boogaloo’ accounts from its platform
Facebook is cracking down on the Boogaloo movement.
On Tuesday, the social media giant that it was classifying a network on its platform associated with the boogaloo movement as a “dangerous organization.” As a result, this network has been banned from the platform.
The Boogaloo boys, as members are often referred, are a far right libertarian extremist movement seeking to incite a civil war in the U.S.
In a statement, Facebook said that it removed 220 Facebook accounts, 106 Facebook Groups, 28 Facebook Pages, and 95 Instagram accounts associated with the Boogaloo movement. The social network also removed 400 additional groups and 100 more pages that it said hosted content similar to that of the banned Boogaloo accounts.
“Today we are designating a violent US-based anti-government network as a dangerous organization and banning it from our platform,” said Facebook in a statement. “This network uses the term boogaloo but is distinct from the broader and loosely-affiliated boogaloo movement because it actively seeks to commit violence. For months, we have removed boogaloo content when there is a clear connection to violence or a credible threat to public safety, and today’s designation will mean we remove more content going forward, including Facebook Groups and Pages.”
The Boogaloo movement rose to national prominence during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown protests. Boogaloo boys also appeared at Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd late last month. Members of the movement are often identifiable by their trademark Hawaiian shirts and are usually carrying firearms.
Steven Carrillo, who identifies as a member of the Boogaloo movement, was last month for allegedly killing a federal officer during a protest in Oakland, California. According to Carrillo, he planned the attack with a man whom he met in a Boogaloo Facebook Group. Carillo is also accused of killing a Santa Cruz sheriff's deputy.
Advocacy groups Facebook in April that the Boogaloo movement was organizing on its platform. In response, the social media company the use of certain Boogaloo-related terminology when accompanied with calls for violence or violent imagery. Not long after that, Facebook also said it would no longer recommend groups that were associated with the movement in an effort to limit its spread.

Even after it lost its designation in 1985, tourists continued to make Route 66 a place of pilgrimage. Ten miles outside Rolla, Missouri, many of them would pull over and have a drink in the St. James Winery taproom, where Josh Stacy, owner of Public House Brewing, would treat them to some of the best craft beer east of the Rockies. “Come in, do your tasting, stock up on your wine, and move en route.” That was the ritual.
But in mid-March, as the world went into lockdown, the crowds stopped coming and the highway cleared of traffic. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the global economy took its deepest dive since the very depression that defined the road on which Public House now stands.
Stacy and his staff were left to contend with history. And they’re doing it by trading in bricks and mortar for a digital future.
“We turned on and created a curbside and delivery service within three days. We had to implement the technology and the infrastructure on the back end to be able to track and collect all that and do the online ordering . . . it was pretty aggressive.”
Like many small businesses around the world, Public House has moved to digital as a means to not only survive, but to put themselves on a path to long-term growth.
“It kind of pushed everything forward, you know, maybe five years . . . we knew that the digital world and our ecommerce business and all these things that we were kind of muddling around with [would be important] . . . but it really did force our hand to move into that world.”
We spoke to Public House Brewing to find out how they’re rebounding, discuss lessons they’ve learned, and share advice on strategies you can apply to your own business.

Small businesses like Public House Brewing are the lifeblood of their communities. Maintaining those relationships has been a top priority.
“This is where they all come out to play,” said Stacy. “This is where they come to hike and camp and fish and all of that . . . we have a really strong connection with our area and with our community.”
In a recent Harris poll, over 60% of business owners said that they believe the community cares about their business. The same poll found that, during the lockdown, 26% of consumers in the United States purchased something from a small business as a sign of support.
With most community purchases now being made online, there has been added pressure on businesses to stay responsive to their most loyal customers.
Stacy and his team have felt the surge. “It has overloaded our little customer service department of one. They’re just overwhelmed.”

India bans TikTok after deadly military conflict, accuses app of 'stealing' data
The Indian government banned TikTok, which is extremely popular in the country, for alleged privacy violations and threatening its "sovereignty."
On Monday, the government of India announced the banning of 59 apps — including TikTok — for "[engaging] in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order." TikTok, notably, is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, and over the past year has faced accusations of violating its users' privacy.
