Facebook Groups Updates, New YouTube Features, and the Facebook Video Creator App

Facebook Rolls Out New Tools and Insights for Groups: Facebook held its first Facebook Communities Summit “with hundreds of group admins” and announced several new admin tools and features “to support their communities on Facebook.” These updates include group insights, a member leaderboard, membership request filtering, removed member cleanup, scheduled posts, and group-to-group linking. YouTube Debuts Several New Updates: YouTube announced a number of new updates that include “more users, more products, more shows and much more” at this year’s VidCon. These changes include a new format from YouTube and Daydream called VR180 and new cameras that promise to make “VR more accessible and more affordable for viewers and creators.” YouTube is also rolling out a new responsive design of its mobile app that will dynamically adapt a video to whatever size you choose to watch it, a new sharing feature that was announced last year, and the expansion of YouTube TV to more markets. YouTube also announced that it’s reached a major milestone of 1.5 billion logged-in monthly viewers and reports that “on average, [its] viewers spend over an hour a day watching YouTube on mobile devices alone.” (16:00)
Facebook Announces New Stand-Alone Video App for Creators: Facebook announced a new stand-alone video app geared toward creators. Ubergizmo reports that this new app “will provide the creator with access to Facebook Live, and also additional tools that allows [sic] them to create intros and outros for broadcasts, custom stickers, custom frames, and so on… [and] provide additional insights to the video so that creators have a better idea of who [is] watching their videos.” (31:33)
Facebook Enables Search for Branded Messenger Bots: Facebook is starting to roll out a new Discover hub within the Messenger platform that “enables people to browse and find bots and businesses in Messenger.” Initially announced at Facebook’s F8 Conference, the new Discover section allows users to “browse by category, recently visited businesses and featured experiences… [and] makes it even easier to get things done, from reading the latest articles, booking your next vacation, or getting the latest sport highlights, right in Messenger.” This new Messenger experience is currently only available in the U.S. and is open to developers and businesses interested in getting their experiences added to the Discover section.
Facebook Messenger Upgrades Video Chat Features: Facebook rolled our several “awesome new features” including animated reactions, new stylistic video filters, augmented reality masks and effects, and the ability to take screenshots. These new features are available for both one-on-one and group video chats on Messenger and are rolling out now.
Facebook Plans to Produce Original TV-Quality Programming: Reuters reported that Facebook is currently in talks with “Hollywood studios about producing scripted, TV-quality shows, with an aim of launching original programming by late summer.” While Facebook is initially “willing to commit to production budgets as high as $3 million per episode” for this content, the platform told The Verge that it would like to “help lots of creators make videos funded through revenue sharing products like Ad Break” over time.
Facebook Messenger Rolls Out Updates to M Suggestions: Facebook began rolling out three new suggestions from M to users in the U.S. These include the ability to suggest that people save content from their Messenger conversations like links, videos, and more. M can also surface birthday reminders and initiate voice or video calls within a Messenger chat. Facebook also announced that suggestions from M will be available in Spain, in both English and Spanish.
Facebook Audience Network Introduces New Rewarded Video Ad Format for Game Publishers: The Facebook Audience Network rolled out Rewarded Video, a new mobile ad format that gives players the choice to watch an ad in exchange for a reward within the game. This new monetization option allows gamers to initiate “a full-screen, immersive video experience” that offers “a positive user experience while also increasing revenue through Facebook’s people-based targeting and high-quality demand.”
Facebook Reaches Over 2 Billion Monthly Active Users Around the World: Facebook surpassed a major milestone of “2 billion people connecting and building communities on Facebook every month.” To celebrate this achievement, Facebook pushed a personalized video for each member and thank-you messages that appear any time a user “reacts to a friend’s post with Love, wishes someone happy birthday, or creates a group.”
Facebook Releases Stats on Marketplace: Facebook shared new insights on the Marketplace, “a convenient destination to discover, buy and sell items with people in your community” that rolled out in October 2016. Adweek reports that “more than 18 million new items were posted for sale to Marketplace in the U.S. in May” and “the most popular categories on Marketplace are furniture; babies and kids; and women’s clothing and shoes.”
CrowdTangle Adds Video Views Metrics for Facebook and Instagram: Content discovery and social monitoring platform CrowdTangle added Facebook and Instagram video views metrics across its service. With these new insights, “publishers can now easily track emerging new trends and best practices on Facebook and Instagram, as well as discover great videos and video creators, see overall video views across their industry, and benchmark themselves against competitors.”
Pinterest Adds Security Features for All Accounts: Pinterest is rolling out two-factor authentication to all users “over the next few weeks.” The company will also provide pinners with a list of all devices logged into their account and will alert them via email when there’s a new login from a new device or location.
Instagram Tests Two New Features for Sharing and Comments: Instagram is currently testing a new sharing feature “that allows you to share photos with just a limited group of friends” and threaded comments on its Android app. Both are small tests and Instagram hasn’t confirmed when either feature is expected to be released more broadly.
Snapchat Rolls Out Ability to Create Custom Geofilter In-App: Snapchat announced that “Snapchatters can now create filters right in the Snapchat app, and customize them with many of the same Creative Tools available to decorate Snaps.” TechCrunch reports that the new built-in mobile creative studio is available for both iOS and Android and allows users to select a template and add filters, text, stickers, and Bitmojis. Just like on-demand filters generated through Snapchat’s studio website, all custom geofilters built on mobile are subject to Snapchat’s approval prior to use. Once the geofilter is approved, payment can also be handled through the app. This new tool is currently only available in the U.S., but “might be expanding to other regions soon.”
