5 Tips for Using Social Media as A Healthcare Professional

The way that a person uses social media is in some ways dictated by which industry they happen to work in. Those who work in the healthcare industry must think about social media in a different way compared to those who don’t. There are important variables that come into play that must be considered.

1) Make Sure All Medical Information Is Correct

If you are to be so bold as to share medical facts on social media, it is important to ensure that they really are facts. There is more than enough misinformation about medical problems on the Internet as it is. No one who prides themselves on working in the medical field should take for granted that the information they provide to the public should be vetted to make sure it is accurate and up to date. People may put a lot of trust in the words that you put down even if just on social media. Do not betray that trust by leaving something out there that is inaccurate.

2) Look for Viral Content to Get the Word Out

Not all content is created equal. There are some messages that people want to read about and share with others more so than others. It is important to give the people what they want and pass on only the information that is likely to be shared. Thus, viral content is king as far as healthcare social media posts. This means finding information that people cannot get anywhere else and posting it.

3) Give A Compelling Story

People tend to appreciate reading about the stories of others when it comes to healthcare situations. They want to know that there are others like them who may be going through some of the same things. A nice and compelling story about individuals who are facing down a particular medical issue can be a great read for someone out there. Of course, it is always better if these stories are uplifting and positive if at all possible.

Do not try to fabricate stories or make something up out of thin air. People will notice and call you out on it. That alone can tank your entire reputation on the Internet, and people are unlikely to want to have anything to do with your posts again in the future if you do something like that. Instead, search for any number of interesting and true medical stories that populate this wide world of ours and share those.

4) Provide Additional Resources

Your information is important and relevant to the lives of many people, but it is not the only source of information for them. They can go elsewhere and find some other facts about the same topic that may also be helpful to them. Don’t pretend like you are the only source of solid medical information. It isn’t true, and it doesn’t do anyone any good. You need to be a resource that people use among many other resources as well. Understand this, and you will be able to provide much superior content to what is out there.

5) Open Up the Discussion for Others The Internet can be a free-for-all sometimes, and it is certainly not a good idea to let things get out of hand, but there are scenarios where it makes sense to open the floor up to those who have something to say about the topics that you address. You may find that they have some important additional details to add or even a personal life story that they might like to share. That can be excellent material to share with your readers, and you shouldn’t pass it up if you can get it on your social media. Be sure to consider doing this as
