Step 2: Sign upOnce Instagram is installed on your phone, open it. Then tap âSign Upâ and enter your email address. You can also sign up with your Facebook account, which, if youâve created a Facebook business page, will be slightly faster and easier. Step 3: Navigate to SettingsThen scroll down to âSwitch to Business Account.â Okay, now youâre ready. Letâs go. 12 Instagram marketing tips you canât afford to ignore1. Optimize your bioAside from your business name, username, and website URL, your Instagram profile provides 150 characters for writing a bio. Your bio is an opportunity to make a first impression, to articulate what your business offers and why people should care. Your bio should explain who you are and what you do while conveying your brandâs identity. This is difficult when you only have 150 characters at your disposal, so itâs important to keep your copy:
That said, if your tagline communicates everything people need to know without emojis and in less than 150 characters, use it, like GQ: 2. Choose the right profile photoBefore visitors ever read your Instagram bio, theyâll see your profile picture. Itâs your first impression. Therefore, the right profile photo for a Business Instagram account is usually your logo. Your logo should be clear and uncut by the Instagramâs trademark circle. If your logo is a square, for example, just zoom out, like Home Depot: 3. Establish your brandâs âlookâ on InstagramEstablishing your brandâs look on Instagram means creating a sense of visual consistency on the platform. Visual consistency is important because it makes your brandâs images instantly recognizable in a sea of other content. This increases the chance that people will engage (e.g., like or comment) with your posts. âSince your goal is to get Instagram users to stop scrolling once they see your image,â explains Sarah Dawley, Senior Copywriter at Hootsuite, âthe more instantly recognizable your photos are, the better. This can be achieved by using the same filter on every image, no exceptions. For example, notice how 33 Acres Brewing Company uses the same, white-color pallet filter across every post: âScrolling through their feed, the style quickly becomes familiar,â explains Dawley, âand you start to associate images that meet these characteristics with the brewery.â 4. Have clearly defined goalsIf you donât create goals, you wonât know if your Instagram Marketing investment is paying off. Creating goals starts with choosing the right metrics to measure your success. These break down into two categories:
The former will tell you if your content is resonating with your target audience. Vanity metrics will also help you measure your Instagram presence against competitors. The latter will help you track and understand how social media is contributing to your broader business results. Both are important in their own right, and should be seriously considered before launching a Business Instagram. To help you think through your agendaâand the metrics that ultimately define itâweâve put together a plan that breaks down how to set and reach social media goals. 5. Create compelling contentCompelling content drives action. It makes people want to share, comment, and click. But before you can make someone take action, you must first get their attention, a finite commodity. That said, there are several proven content formats that make people stop scrolling and focus. These include: Behind-the-scenes shotsUse this type of content to introduce and showcase the people behind your business. Behind-the-scenes images and videos humanize your brand, reminding followers that your business is the product of community and collaboration, people working together to create something bigger than themselves. You can create posts that profile executives, showcase your office, or feature employees hard at work (or not!). Anything that gives outsiders and inside look, like this: Quotes and text-based imagesPeople love reading quotes they understand and can relate to, which makes this a simple yet effective strategy to boost engagement. Anything thatâs valuable and easy to consume, like this: Daily hashtagsThis is a great way to focus your content, creating a theme that gives your audience something they instantly recognize and even look forward to. Itâll also help you generate ideas in a pinch. You can create classic hashtags, like #tbt (Throwback Thursday), which most people know. Or you can create something new, something unique to your business. Anything thatâs entertaining or inspiring, and gives people a theme to latch onto, like this: 6. Master the little-known features and hacksDid you know you can:
Instagram is a deep, feature-rich platform that anyone can use to create unique content. Mastering these little-known features and hacks will ensure that youâre using Instagram to its full potential, creating content for someone rather than just anyone. Te help you with this, weâve put together a list of Instagram tricks and features you probably didnât know about. 7. Partner with relevant influencersA paid partnership with a a relevant influencer (i.e., a popular account that shares your audience and/or industry) is a proven way to drive attention to your business. But not all influencer partnerships are created equal. According to Lee Vosburgh, who created the blog Style Bee and the Instagram account @LeeVosburgh, there are several questions you should ask yourself as you consider the right influencer to work with, including:
You should also plan to pay for your partnership. âThe bottom line,â writes Vosburgh, âis that free product wonât pay the rest and the work is worth real dollars if itâs going to generate sales for a brand.â 8. Write great captionsWhen it comes to engagement, captions are arguably as important as the image or video they compliment. âA great caption will add context, show off your brands personality, entertain the audience, and compel people to take action,â explains Michael Aynsley, editor of the Hootsuite blog. Like any good copy, the best captions are clear and concise, easy to read. The best captions, in fact, donât make the reader think at all. Theyâre effortless to consume and understand. Achieving this effect comes down to knowing your audience and your brand voice. The former will ensure that your content is interesting, memorable. The latter will ensure that your content is consistent, recognizable. You can also practice good copywriting tactics (e.g., placing the most important words at the beginning of the caption; using small words and short sentence) and techniques (e.g., always making time to edit after you write; posing relevant, thought-provoking questions). For more help with this, read our post on how to write good Instagram captions. 9. Choose hashtags wiselyIn the battle for attention, hashtags are a potent tool. Used well, a hashtag can drive hoards of net-new visitors to your post, profile, and brand. But if the hashtag is misleadingâif itâs overused or irrelevant to the content altogetherâit can be extremely counterproductive. Why? Because when a user follows a hashtag and sees something they donât like, they can select the âDonât Show for This Hashtag option: âThis feature is designed to teach the Instagram algorithm what content a particular user likes,â explains Hootsuite editor, Michael Aynsley. âNo, thereâs no such thing as the Instagram âshadowban.â But if too many of your posts are flagged, itâs reasonable to assume your content will be shown less often (or not at all).â When creating hashtags:

The Explore tab is where users find curated content based on their previous actions and engagement patterns. In other words, Instagram watches what you do on the platform (e.g., the posts you like, share, and comment on), then populates your Explore tab with similar content. Instagram also sources content with high engagement as well as content from accounts similar to those the user already follows. Itâs all about data and pattern recognition, which begs the question: How do you get your content on the Explore tab? While thereâs no hard-and-fast method, there are several things you can do to increase your chances: Know your audience:Whoâs your target customer? What interests her? Who does she already follow on Instagram? Reverse engineer your target audience to truly understand what moves them to engagement. Use hashtags:Hashtags are the most effective way to make your content discoverable, to get it in front of net-new eyeballs. Hashtags enable people to find your content, which is why every marketer must use them. If you study the doâs and donâts of using hashtags, your content will enjoy more engagementâ and that could land you on the Explore tab faster than you think. Which brings me to my next point⦠Encourage engagement:The more likes and comments and shares an Instagram post gets, the more likely it is to appear on your target audienceâs explore tab. Encourage engagement by geo-tagging your posts and mentioning other relevant accounts in your captions. The more relevant you make your post to other people and brands, the more action you stand to compel. 11. Target the right audience with adsIf youâre in a competitive space, you might consider using Instagram ads to market your brand. Instagram offers five ad formats: videos, carousels, photos, canvas Story ads, and Story ads. Each format is incorporated into your target audienceâs Feed or Story, making it hard to miss. Of course, you can grow your Instagram presence organically, without spending a cent. But this will take time. If you donât have time, ads will help you get where youâre going faster. To help you with this, weâve put together an Instagram advertising guide for marketers. 12. Track your performance with Instagram analyticsTracking and understanding your analytics is the only way to ensure youâre on track to achieve your Instagram Marketing goals (see: #4) and objectives.
