This Startup Is Trying To Create A More Sustainable Condom http://ift.tt/2mf2TRj Sustain Natural produces all natural sexual health products and is now marketing a vegan condom Everything can be vegan; from cupcakes to shoes and handbags —and now even condoms. Sustain Natural, a Vermont-based manufacturer of all natural “vagina-friendly” products, has launched a new non-toxic, eco-friendly, vegan condom. And to top things off, it’s fair trade. The latex comes from a fair trade, solar-powered, Indian rubber plantation and all the company’s products, including the vegan condom are “free of toxins and carcinogens commonly found in most condoms, tampons, and lubes.” The Sustain father-daughter team want to include sexual health products in the realm of what the average ethical consumer can look for. They are working to place them in line with other organic markets that are already in demand such as make-up, and cleaning supplies. But, in spite of all their efforts to remove mitrosamines—carcinogenic in large doses—and getting rid of a milk protein used to produce most condoms to make them truly vegan, an article in the New York Times outlined that their sales have not been up to par. Part of it is the condom market itself, which is hard to predict. Another reality was they couldn’t find any backers and have been funding themselves. Even though they’ve broken into some of the bigger retail pharmacies, their vegan condoms are far from being part of the norm. Still, their company has a drive and clear mission; 10 percent of their profits go towards women’s healthcare organizations. They’ve also started a bigger marketing push, trying to appeal to a larger consumer base that wouldn’t necessarily care whether their condoms are vegan or not.
