Amazon launched a secure delivery option that works even when you're not at home
The new Amazon Key In-Home Kit lets the retailer’s couriers deliver right inside your home. The kit includes the Amazon Cloud Camera and a compatible smart lock that lets delivery people place packages behind your doors.
When a messenger arrives, the Cloud Cam sends a signal to unlock the front door. Amazon’s Wi-Fi-enabled camera uses the Zigbee protocol to trigger the deadbolt while recording the actual delivery. Once it’s done, the customer may review the footage for peace of mind. An app also lets you unlock the door for visitors, the cleaners or the dog walker when you’re not at home.
This is a timely move for Amazon whose interest in getting into pharmaceuticals is already shaking up that industry. With the lack of secure delivery being a major drawback, the success of the Amazon Key In-Home Kit would be a step in that direction.
The kit starts at $250.
