The most photographed staircase in the world – this extraordinary trio of shots comes to us from Jim Nix who happily found himself exploring the Vatican on a tour with an eye towards photographing this incredible staircase. Jim’s composition takes advantage of the repeating patterns and geometry to deliver an almost abstract study of this incredible bit of majestic architecture.

Hamnoy – a frozen vista greets us in this beautiful landscape piece by wim denijs captured in the heart of winter in Norway. The wonderful red homes that dot the shores of the body of water add a great anchor into the shot, showing a bit of the scale of the dramatic setting along with the surrounding beauty the locals experience on a daily basis.

Replacing the windows – Andy Hooker (LensScaper) does a terrific job with this composition, using the reflections in a set of floor to ceiling windows as a mirror to create an optical effect that is both abstract and captivating at the same time. The contrast of glass and slightly weathered wood work in great harmony together in this piece to add the perfect finishing touch.

I love Istanbul – this vertigo inducing shot features strong elements of dynamic motion against a clear subject of a fast moving train in a tunnel, captured in Istanbul, Turkey by Gürkan Gündoğdu. The perfect blending of the fast-moving train caught perfectly still in the blink of an eye with the blurry lines from the tunnel are totally remarkable here.

the windy sunset – Frank King captures a stunning shot, capturing beautiful colors in the sky as the sun begins to set over a frozen landscape. The natural color palette created by the fading light of day is quite extraordinary in this scene, perfectly captured and frozen in time in this photograph.

sunset in waves – a beautiful dash of color on the horizon offsets the deep and dark contrasts that form the silhouettes of natural features that fill the foreground of this shot taken on the shore. Agnès Perrodon uses a long exposure during this late time of day to create a sense of motion in the ocean, with great details filling in the rest of the frame.

Le tournis – a forlorn and long forgotten villa creates the perfect photographic opportunity for Yannick M. to capture this terrific urbex themed image. A spiral staircase, unused for many years, forms a terrific series of lines and geometry that naturally draw the eye upwards where details and textures are revealed from years of natural decay.

yosemite falls. yosemite. California – Tanner Wendell Stewart captures a moody landscape shot that focuses on a breathtaking waterfall in this world-famous national park. Low hanging clouds add a veil of fog to the upper area of the falls, adding a perfect bit of drama to a compelling image.

Todd Creek – local Vancouver Island based photographer Jason McKenzie captures a beautiful scene that speaks of our rainforests and fast running creeks that are found everywhere here on the island. The old trees in this composition are covered in a thick, luscious moss, adding color and texture, all creations by nature that reflect our landscapes and forests.

Singularity – this stunning shot was captured high atop a crane as a vibrant sunset painted the sky in wonderful color in this incredible photograph from Bryson Gibbons. The lines from the arm of the crane create a perfect leading line, culminating in a vanishing point that draws the eye into the very heart of the frame.

Benches and a Sunset – incredible oranges and reds dance across the screen in this wide panoramic shot from Barry Turner. Barry anchors this shot with a bench looking out over the still bay as clouds linger in the distance to add texture to the vibrant skies.

The Giant King – Marco Carotenuto’s shot features spectacular green hues in the dark skies above Iceland created by the very active aurora borealis. A rock formation adds a great anchor in this composition, accented by the muted reflection of the scene in the semi-still waters that sit in the foreground.

Google abandons the Nik Collection – Won’t develop it beyond CC 2015

Google haven’t so much announced as “slipped in” that they’ve ceased development of the Nik Collection via a banner. Google acquired Nik Software, the company behind the Collection, in 2012. It was only just over a year ago that Google announced it was making the Nik Collection a completely free download for all users. Now, it seems, that the new price tag doesn’t justify continued development.

The Nik Collection contains seven applications. Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine. For now it’s still available, compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 through 10.10, Windows Vista, 7 & 8, Adobe Photoshop CS4 through CC2015 and Lightroom 3 through 6/CC. Unofficially, the Nik Collection also seems to run fine on Windows 10, too, for now.

The new banner at the top of the Nik Collection website states…

The Nik Collection is free and compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 through 10.10; Windows Vista, 7, 8; and Adobe Photoshop through CC 2015.

We have no plans to update the Collection or add new features over time. Learn more about Nik.

The Nik Collection already had a pretty strong and loyal following before it was made free. Google’s decision to eliminate the price tag made it very popular, and a staple in many Photographers post workflow.

Now that it’s been abandoned, users may be forced to either find alternatives or for those using it as a plugin, stick with older versions of Photoshop. For Windows users, the Collection does does currently work on Windows 10, even if Google don’t list it. Although there’s no guarantees that it will continue to do so in the future.

I tend not to use 3rd party plugins with Photoshop for reasons such as this. Every time a new version of Photoshop comes out, it takes plugin authors a while to catch up. Some plugins never get updated at all. To rely on one or more plugins for part of one’s workflow can make for a whole mess of problems if they suddenly disappear.

The Godox AD200 flash has proven to be very popular since it was released a couple of months ago. A $299 200Ws flash with a similar form factor to a mid 90s cellphone, and interchangeable heads. Thus far, two different heads have been available for this unit, both of which come supplied. There’s the speedlight-style Fresnel head, and a strobe-like bare bulb, just like the AD360II.

At the moment, you can turn the Fresnel flash head continuous by enabling the modelling light. But now, Adorama have put up a new product for pre-order. A dedicated continuous LED head for the Godox AD200 (or eVOLV 200, as Adorama call it).

It’s available to pre-order right now for $24.50. Not a bad price if you already own the AD200. There’s not really any specs or details yet, beyond it being 3.6 Watts. That doesn’t sound all that powerful, really, but may be enough for some video application. With only around 100 individual LEDs, you’re certainly not going to be blotting out the sun.

There’s no news when it will ship, nor has there been any official word from Godox yet. Whether this is something Adorama have had developed themselves independently or it’s another Godox rebadge is unclear. But I would expect it’s the latter. I would also hope it’s the latter, because that means it will become available in other countries.

It’s been suggested that other heads may be on the way including a ring light in both LED and strobe flavours. If this is true, then the AD200 is looking to become far more versatile than many had expected. I might even have to get one myself if that ring flash head appears.

Jupiter’s animated photos from Juno Spacecraft are out of this world

As you probably already know, NASA makes their photo library publicly available. Thanks to this, from time to time there are devoted artists and space geeks who turn the images from NASA into something new and beautiful. This time, photographer Sean Doran took still photos of Jupiter and turned them into a mesmerizing animation.

The photos taken by Juno spacecraft are awe-inspiring on their own, but the video adds a totally new dimension. Have you ever tried to imagine yourself orbiting around Jupiter? This video makes you feel like you do, and it’s simply wonderful.

As Colossal reports, Juno spacecraft records data and takes photos of Jupiter for 2 hours every 53 days. It takes an impressive amount of time to download the data collected during this time – around 1.5 days. From there, all of the images become publicly available in NASA’s gallery, for all of us to download. We can use them just to enjoy the view, or create something nice from them and share it with the world.

Sean Doran used the latest still images of Jupiter to create the video above. Gerald Eichstädt colorized the photos, and Sean stitched them together into the animation that shows what orbiting around Jupiter would look like. And I must say, if the human kind ever gets to fly around the largest planet – it seems we will have a really amazing view through the spaceship window.

“You’re never too old for fairy tales.” Led by this thought, photographer Savannah Kate Morgan turns all our favorite fairy tales into gorgeous images. She recreates the tales using her camera, Photoshop skills, and lots of imagination. Scenes from Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Alice in Wonderland – they are only some you will see eternalized in these dreamy photos. And even if you haven’t read a fairytale or seen a Disney movie in a while – these photos will remind you of childhood, at least for a moment.

The Neverending Story

Savannah Kate says she has always loved fairy tales. She’s been obsessed with all things whimsical and magical ever since she was a young girl. As she is a photographer, she’s used photography to express her emotions, depict her vision of the world, but sometimes also hide from it. At some point, her long-lasting love for fairy tales and photography got together – and this series of photos started coming to life.

Pocahontas

Although she mainly photographs weddings and portraits, these fairy tale sessions have always been Savannah Kate’s passion. This series has been created over a couple of years, and the photographer chooses an interesting way of presenting them. Since many of the tales also exist as movies, the photographer uses movie scenes she wanted to recreate. Dont Let AI Ruin Your Photography

This week, Google’s AlphaGo program beat the world’s best Go player, Ke Jie, in 2 straight games in a best of 5 series. Go is considered to be the world’s hardest board game, and some AI experts didn’t think that a machine would be able to best humans for another decade.

In the area of photography, companies like Google have already introduced various aspects of machine learning allowing users to search for photos by keyword without having ever entered keywords. Combined with other features like facial recognition give the user surprisingly accurate and useful results. It’s clear that AI has reached a powerful inflection point.

It a not-so-surprising development, entrepreneur Ryan Stout launched a Kickstarter campaign for a camera accessory called “Arsenal” which uses machine learning to help you take better pictures. In his words “Today’s DSLR and mirrorless cameras have amazing optics and sensors, but they do very little to actually help you take a good photo.”

The statement isn’t completely accurate. Various modes on a number of different cameras do almost exactly what Arsenal purports to do – optimizing for various settings (e.g. shutter speed for sports) depending on the situation. Arsenal allegedly uses machine learning, fine tuning “18 different factors” to yield the best photo.

The more practical features of the device include automation for techniques like focus stacking, HDR, and time-lapse. The wireless features also appear to be pretty great (1:1 zooming) assuming the app software is as responsive and bug-free as the video depicts.

Kickstarter hardware projects are notorious for being late, if ever delivering. Many well-intentioned entrepreneurs frequently run into the complexity and difficulty of fulfilling a physical product. And I would certainly urge caution that a $150 device could be delivered by January 2018 by a first time camera hardware entrepreneur.

But the larger issue is one of human creativity. Computers have been able to emulate the musical style of humans for many years. But that doesn’t mean that I enjoy listening to or playing with a computer. For many people, photography is a sole (soul) creative outlet – one that doesn’t require copious amount of time, but still flexes the creative muscle. Using machine learning with a dataset of images of a certain provenance leads to predictable results. Water is always blurred because the algorithm told us so. High dynamic range scenes are always rendered as such. We might still control where we point our camera (for now), but the serendipity of creating a different photo because we tweaked the knobs instead of a computer is lost. What then, is the point of even taking a photo if the result is a postcard image like every other postcard image?

Arsenal’s package of features is impressive – especially at the price point – and the major camera manufacturers would be smart to consider how they might integrate some of Arsenal’s features into their own future cameras. But I hope some of the 2,000 backers (and growing) of the project stop to consider what photography means to them, and how this device might hamper rather than help their photography.

The Canon 6D Mark II’s Reported Articulating Screen Has People Excited

If you haven't heard already, the folks at Canon Rumors have confirmed that Canon's next release of the 6D Mark II will have an articulating screen, specifically a Vari-Angle LCD. This means you'll be able to flip it out and change the angle up to 180 degrees (as opposed to just a simple flip out).

This is actually a pretty big thing for gear aficionados as this will be the first full frame Canon DSLR to have such a screen which opens up a lot of new possibilities in shooting. Other manufacturers such as Sony, Pentax and Nikon already have articulated screens on several models of full frame DSRLs, but on many of these the screen only rotates on one axis.

What's So Good About an Articulating Screen?

If you have ever shot with an articulating screen, you will know that this lends an element of diversity to your shooting angles that simply isn't possible with a fixed screen or a view finder. Shooting from the hip is much easier, as is practically any other angle.

For example, now you won't have to (necessarily) lie down on the ground to shoot from the ground. You will be able to shoot from above your head and actually see what you are shooting on the screen.

But Wait!

Of course, some people are not huge fans of this as it is also relatively easy to damage such a screen, and in real life when you're moving the camera around a lot and shooting from different angles, they are quite easy to knock and get caught up on things.

What Else?

The Mark II will reportedly be slightly larger than the 6D and will be announced in July for shipping in August.
