iPhone XS Max Signal Strength Compared to OnePlus 7 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S10 http://bit.ly/2LEkhfv The Samsung Galaxy S10 and the new OnePlus 7 Pro are both flagship smartphones that are designed to compete with the iPhone XS Max, and to see how their LTE chips compare, PCMag teamed up with Cellular Insights to test the signal strength of the new devices. Apple's iPhone XS Max is equipped with an XMM7560 modem chip from Intel, while the Galaxy S10 and the OnePlus 7 Pro are using Qualcomm's X24 modem, which theoretically offers better performance. The Intel XMM7560 modem in the iPhone XS Max supports supports 5-carrier aggregation but offers 1Gb/s maximum theoretical data transfer speeds, while the Qualcomm X24 in the Galaxy S10 has max theoretical speeds of 2Gb/s (it uses 7-carrier aggregation) and the OnePlus 7 Pro has max theoretical speeds of 1.2Gb/s (lower because it uses 5-carrier aggregation like the iPhone). In testing on LTE band 4 with good signal, there wasn't a lot of difference in performance between the iPhone XS Max, the newer smartphones from Samsung and OnePlus, and the LG V40, which PCMag added in because it was 2018's best performing phone in terms of cellular speed. All of the smartphones performed similarly, but the Samsung Galaxy S10 did see some of the slowest speeds, and at peak signal, the iPhone XS came in behind the OnePlus 7 Pro and the LG V40. In a test with poorer LTE signal, the iPhone XS Max saw the slowest speeds and was outperformed by all of the Qualcomm chips. The iPhone XS Max was quite a bit slower than the Galaxy S10 and the OnePlus 7 Pro specifically. Starting in 2020, Apple is no longer going to use Intel chips and is instead going to transition to Qualcomm's 5G chips. Intel has decided that it's exiting the 5G smartphone modem chip business leaving Apple no choice but to rely on Qualcomm technology and perhaps some chips from Samsung. Apple and Qualcomm recently settled a vicious legal battle which had seen Apple refusing to use Qualcomm chips. Because of the dispute, Apple used Intel chips in the 2018 iPhones, and is expected to continue to use Intel chips for the 2019 iPhones. Though the legal battle is over, Apple isn't likely to have time to swap over to Qualcomm modem chips for the 2019 iPhones, and Intel has confirmed that it's going to continue to supply 4G chips to meet its current obligations. Uber drivers are freelancers, not employees, federal labor lawyer says http://bit.ly/2VosC6P Uber drivers are independent contractors, not employees of the ride-hailing company, the federal labor board’s general counsel said in an opinion released May 14th. It’s another sign that drivers and labor advocates face a steep — if impossible — hill to climb to force Uber to reclassify its drivers as employees. The opinion, authored April 16th by Jayme Sophir, associate general counsel at the National Labor Relations Board, means that drivers will have a much harder time trying to form a union, file labor complaints, or seek protections from the federal government. It states:
It’s the latest sign that the federal government agrees with Uber’s classification of its drivers. The Department of Labor issued an opinion recently stating that gig workers like Uber drivers are contractors ineligible for minimum wages and overtime pay. A federal judge ruled basically the same way last year in what is said to be the first classification of Uber drivers under federal law. This opinion lines up with Uber’s own stance on its drivers. The company classifies them as independent contractors, arguing they are in business for themselves and thus ineligible for traditional benefits like overtime, minimum wage protections, and health insurance. Some Uber drivers contest that classification, though, and argue that Uber’s algorithm exerts far too much control over their lives to be viewed otherwise. Many have sued Uber, but most of those cases have been sent to private arbitration. “We are focused on improving the quality and security of independent work, while preserving the flexibility drivers and couriers tell us they value,” an Uber spokesperson said Tuesday. Uber said it had settled with a large majority of the 60,000 drivers in the US who filed arbitration demands over their employment status. Uber said the settlement will cost it between $146 million and $170 million, according to its IPO filing. In March, the company said it settled two other lawsuits with drivers of classification status for $20 million. Earlier this year, a federal judge in California ruled drivers for GrubHub are independent contractors, not employees. The ruling was seen as a big win for GrubHub due to California’s relatively high standard for establishing workers as independent contractors. Last week, hundreds of Uber drivers went on strike ahead of the company’s much-anticipated IPO. Drivers said they want better working conditions and more transparency from Uber over wages and access to the platform. Uber’s stock price has dropped precipitously since the IPO amid concerns over the company’s lack of profitability and a broader market crunch. How to Take the Best Photos to Sell Your Home http://bit.ly/2WI1TDD Itâs springtime and, finally, the temps are warming up, the flowers are blooming, the grass is getting green, and you might be thinking to yourself: âNow would be a good time to sell my house.â And youâd be right. Not only is May traditionally a good time of year to sell, but all that lovely spring color in your yard means makes it the prime opportunity to take photos that show off your home at its best. But taking photos during the right season isnât the only thing to keep in mind when you start snapping those pics. There are a few other simple tactics you can use to get the best results when youâre ready to list your home for sale. Stage itBefore you do anything else, you need to stage your home. That means decluttering, cleaning up, taking down all those personal family pictures and tucking away any eyesores that might detract from the features youâre trying to highlight. Weâve got a good guide for you here: Go naturalNatural light is your best friend when it comes to showcasing your home. Donât rely on your cameraâs flash because itâs likely to cast harsh shadows and reflect off mirrors or windows. You can turn on the lights in the home, but also make sure to throw open the blinds and drapes. Shoot your photos early in the day before the sun gets too lowâand donât take photos on a gloomy, rainy day. To take the best possible outdoor pictures of your home, the best time of day will depend on which direction your home faces. Youâll want the sun behind you when you take your outdoor photos to minimize shadows. So for east-facing homes, get out there and start shooting first thing in the morning. For west-facing homes, afternoon is better. When in doubt, if youâre in a rush and need the photos taken all at once, opt for the morning. Kneel downYou know how when you take a selfie, you raise your arm up and tilt the phone to get that angle that magically slims your face? Yeah, you want to do the opposite when youâre taking pictures of your home. This is possibly the one time when you want the object youâre photographing to look as large-and-in-charge as possible, so take a knee before you start shooting. Shoot from an angleWhen youâre shooting interior rooms of the house, stand in a corner or doorway to get the widest possible angle and allow potential buyers to imagine themselves walking through the home. When youâre photographing the exterior try standing at an angle, rather than straight-on, to show the depth of the home. Take a few close-upsIf your home has âcharacter,â then by all means, showcase it. It doesnât hurt to include a few close-up shots of the beautiful wood trim around the windows, the kitchen backsplash or the staircase spindles. Donât go overboard on these; less is more when it comes to close-ups, but highlighting a detail or two is a nice touch. Keep it realDonât go so overboard that you make your home look like something itâs not. Having a bunch of potential buyers show up and go, âUh, that was false advertising,â wonât do you any good. So donât use the old photos of your home from when you bought it 12 years ago before the paint on the siding started chipping all over and you allowed every last bush to get wildly overgrown. And donât use a wide-angle lens to make your smallish rooms look massive. You want to show your home in its best light, but it does still need to look like your home. Twitter fights vaccine misinformation with new search tool http://bit.ly/2E7VJ8s If you search for tweets related to vaccines as of Friday, the first thing you see on Twitter is a post from the United States Department of Health and Human Services pointing you to reliable health information instead of anti-vax misinformation. Last week, Twitter announced that it would be launching a new tool in search that would prompt users to head to vaccines.org, which is run by officials at HHS. Over the past few months, social media companies like Facebook and Twitter have faced intense pressure from lawmakers and the public to remove anti-vaccination propaganda from their platforms. “We’re committed to protecting the health of the public conversation on Twitter,” the blog post read. “Ensuring individuals can find information from authoritative sources is a key part of that mission.” The tool only shows up on Android, iOS, and Twitter’s mobile site in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Korea as of right now. The desktop version of the tool is accessible to users in Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, and countries in Latin America that are predominantly Spanish-speaking. Twitter has used a similar tool that prompts users who search for terms related to suicide to contact a hotline for help. According to the blog post, Twitter intends to extend this tool to other health-related search terms in the future. “This new investment builds on our existing work to guard against the artificial amplification of non-credible content about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines,” the blog said. Last week, it was announced that Instagram would hide search results for anti-vax hashtags on its platform, effectively blocking any associated content from surfacing. In March, Facebook said that it would work to curb vaccine misinformation, but reporters have continued to find posts intended to dissuade people from being vaccinated. The OnePlus 7 Pro isn’t alone — meet the OnePlus 7 http://bit.ly/2HuwcqW OnePlus has done it again. It’s created a monster smartphone with an incredible array of flagship specs and features — including a 90Hz AMOLED screen and a motorized pop-up selfie cam — at the recently unimaginable price of $699. And it’s actually good. But the new OnePlus 7 Pro is just one of the two new phones the company announced today. Though OnePlus didn’t even mention it during its big New York City presser, there’s also a regular OnePlus 7 arriving as soon as next month. You can take a look at the company’s UK product page for all the details, but the short version is this: it’s cheaper (£499 vs. £649), smaller (5mm shorter, 6.41-inch vs. 6.67-inch screen), and way less fancy, with a teardrop notch instead of that pop-up camera. While it’s still got an AMOLED screen, presumably with the inky blacks and vibrant colors they afford, OnePlus doesn’t even bother to list its resolution. (Maybe that’s the catch.) And yet, we’re talking about a phone that still sounds high-end, with the same top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855 processor, up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of fast UFS 3.0 storage, and the same 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 main camera, complete with optical image stabilization and a secondary 5-megapixel depth sensor for portrait mode shots. It’s similarly covered in Gorilla Glass front and back, features the same dual stereo speakers, and even has an in-display optical fingerprint sensor. The battery’s a tad less capacious at 3,700mAh, but then again so is the phone. It’s a dual-SIM device, too, but that’s probably because it doesn’t seem to be destined for the US. Supported regions appear to be the UK and Europe, China, and India. We’ll need to wait for a full review to see if it’s really an affordable, smaller alternative to the OnePlus 7 Pro for those regions, instead of an also-ran. But if you don’t need a 90Hz screen, 12GB of RAM, liquid cooling, telephoto and wide-angle cameras, and that motorized pop-up selfie cam, it sounds like it could be a solid upper-midrange option. It’ll arrive in the UK and India this June. Gadget News via The Verge http://bit.ly/1jLudMg May 14, 2019 at 12:56PM |
