Hackers obtain millions of cards from Planet Hollywood's parent company

https://ift.tt/2HQbx3i

More than a few restaurant-goers in the US will want to check their bank statements. Earl Enterprises has confirmed that hackers used point-of-sale malware to scoop up credit and card data at some of its US restaurants between May 2018 and March 2019, including virtually all Buca di Beppo locations, a few Earl of Sandwich locations and Planet Hollywood's presences in Las Vegas, New York City and Orlando. It's a fairly large data breach -- KrebsOnSecurity discovered that a trove of 2.15 million cards were on sale in the black market as of February.

The affected data doesn't include online orders or some of Earl's other chains (Bertucci's, Café Hollywood and Seaside on the Pier), but does include sensitive info like card numbers, customer names and expiration dates.

Earl said the breach was "contained" and that you shouldn't be at risk if you visit today. However, the timing is less than ideal -- 10 months is a long time for intruders to have access to sensitive payment details. It's also uncertain if there were other cards beyond those up for sale. Either way, the incident makes a case for strong data breach disclosure policies. A timely, clear response can potentially prevent data from falling into the wrong hands, or at least minimize the damage.

Man pleads guilty to hijacking Apple IDs of rappers and sports stars

https://ift.tt/2YBs8Ns

The end to Celebgate didn't mark the end to attempts to exploit superstars. Georgia resident Kwamaine Ford has pleaded guilty to hijacking Apple IDs of athletes (including NBA and NFL players) and rappers for the sake of spending sprees. From "at least" March 2015 onward, Ford tricked stars into handing over their account details primarily through a phishing campaign where he posed as an Apple customer support rep. Whenever he succeeded, he'd change the sign-in details and attempt to obtain credit card information. He'd use that to pay for "thousands of dollars" of travel, furniture and money transfers.

Ford was indicted on six counts back in April 2018, but is only pleading guilty to one count each of computer fraud and aggravated identity theft. Sentencing is due to take place June 24th.

Officials didn't name the victims or outline the full extent of the damage. It's not certain that Ford will face a long time behind bars when even the toughest sentence from Celebgate amounted to less than three years in prison. However, it's a not-so-subtle reminder that phishing schemes can succeed against anyone, including sports and music stars who should know that they're likely to be targets.

DEA never checked if its bulk surveillance data was legal

https://ift.tt/2FDAhIy

If you thought the DEA's mass surveillance was irresponsible, you're not the only one. The Justice Department's Inspector General has released a report showing that the DEA "failed to conduct a comprehensive legal analysis" of three bulk data gathering programs to verify they were above board. On top of this, the policies to govern data use were either vague or non-existent, opening up the potential for abuse.

There was good reason to put those efforts under tight scrutiny, the Inspector General's office said.

Under one program, nicknamed Program A, the DEA relied on "non-target specific" subpoenas to make telecoms supply metadata for calls made between the US and countries it deemed a "nexus to drugs," even when there was no apparent link to a specific case. Program B, meanwhile, used equally vague subpoenas to scoop up data for anyone buying certain products through key vendors, and had no plans to get rid of that data once it was no longer useful. Program C saw the DEA buy metadata on targets through a contractor for another agency, but it wasn't clear if the DEA's authority covered that data.

On top of this, the DEA took numerous steps that "hindered" the Inspector General's access to info.

The potential for abuse isn't as high as it was years ago. The DEA shut down Program B in 2013, and scaled back Program A to focus on specific investigations in the wake of Edward Snowden's leaks. The DEA also told Nextgov in a statement that it agreed to abide by 16 recommendations from the report that would keep bulk data collection legal and respectful of civil rights. Still, the findings aren't comforting -- they indicate that the DEA spent years (dating as far back as 1992) gathering data without checking that was honoring the law, compromising privacy safeguards in the process.

Finished Atari VCS design pays homage to its 2600 roots

https://ift.tt/2UjW4hT

Now that the Atari VCS team has once again delayed its retro console to give it more powerful innards, it's ready to show what that redesign looks like. The developers have unveiled what they say is the "production-ready" system design, and it pays even more of an ode to the Atari 2600 than before. The main body now floats above the base like the 2600 did, and addresses multiple "practical considerations" in the process. To start, two of the USB ports are now front-facing -- it's much easier to plug in a controller or keyboard.

It's also considerably easier to make, with less wasted plastic and more space for cooling that new embedded AMD Ryzen chip. The VCS will also have a simpler light setup that uses Atari's signature "Fuji" logo for alerts rather than a separate set of four lights.

There is a drawback to this redesign, though. The creators have removed the rear SD card slot, calling it "redundant" when you can plug in a thumb drive or external hard drive. That's not going to please gamers who wanted to quickly transfer data, but the Atari VCS group is betting that you won't mind when most other consoles don't offer the feature.

The VCS is due to arrive in late 2019. It's easy to be cynical about talks of a finished design given the system's history -- it has gone through numerous delays, revisions and even name changes, and it wouldn't be surprising if there was another complication or two before then. However, this may really be an illustration of the dangers of both announcing early and relying on crowdfunding. Projects like this are effectively designed in public, and that means seeing many of the revisions that would normally remain behind closed doors.

Microsoft unveils new Surface Book 2 model with Intel’s latest quad-core processor

https://ift.tt/2UkJrTH

Surfacebook 2

Microsoft is quietly refreshing its Surface Book 2 base model today. The software giant is introducing Intel’s latest 8th Gen quad-core i5 processor for the 13-inch Surface Book 2 model, and keeping the existing dual-core 7th Gen model at a discounted price of $1,299. The refreshed quad-core model will be priced at $1,499, and includes an i5-8350U which bumps the processor’s maximum boost clock speed up to 3.6GHz.

The new mid-range Surface Book 2 will also include 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. The processor is the only significant change, but it should make a big difference for performance. We saw impressive jumps in performance from quad-core Surface Pro 6 models compared to the dual-core chips used in previous models. Microsoft has quietly launched this new model today, following rumors the company was planning to refresh the Surface Book 2.

Microsoft is also holding a Surface event on April 17th in New York City. The company is expected to detail pricing and availability for its Surface Hub 2 hardware, and associated accessories and office furniture from Steelcase. The Verge will be covering Microsoft’s Surface NYC event, so stay tuned for all the news.
