The ‘Fortnite’ World Cup will include a big-money event for creatives https://engt.co/2XhcENc If you're a keen Fortnite player or avid battle royale Twitch viewer, you'll probably know that qualifying for the inaugural Fortnite World Cup has officially begun. Top players (including popular streamers) from across the globe now need to out-eliminate each other to make the $30 million Finals held in New York City between July 26th and July 28th. However, that might not be the only way. Epic Games has confirmed there will be another avenue for those burnt out by its battle royale mode to claim some of that World Cup prize pot. The company has announced a new mode for its upcoming competition: World Cup Creative. Between April 29th and June 7th, Fortnite will host "five showcase events" that will invite players to complete unique Creative trials -- courses built by inventive designers -- and submit their best attempts by way of a YouTube video. Epic's dedicated Fortnite captains -- most of which haven't been announced yet -- will choose the best submissions and select fifteen participants to battle it out for a $3 million prize pool in New York City. The first trial will be built and judged by Cizzorz, a top-level Fortnite player known for building incredibly difficult "Death Run" courses inside the game's Creative mode. A new area will be added every week for five weeks, requiring players to master challenging environments and show off their accuracy. Epic says more information on the trials and who it has chosen to be its captains will be made available via its social channels before things officially kick off. With $100 million put aside purely for in-game competitions, Epic is ensuring that Fortnite can become an esports hit in its own right. The game already counts over 200 million players and aspiring pro gamers don't need to be part of an esports organization to make a name for themselves. However, you can bet that professional teams will be watching the World Cup qualifiers and Finals to scout new talent. Gadget News via Engadget http://www.engadget.com April 18, 2019 at 09:06AM

'Child's Play' trailer shows Chucky controlling smart homes and drones https://engt.co/2XmlqcL A reboot of the Child's Play franchise will hit theaters this summer and while we already had a good idea killer toy Chucky would be more of a robot with AI capabilities this time around, the latest trailer provides further confirmation he'll be able to control smart homes. Terrifying. Among the items Chucky, or Buddi as the doll is known here, can take charge of is a drone -- let's hope it's nothing like the kamikaze or shotgun-wielding ones developed in Russia. It looks like he'll be able to tap into connected cars and thermostats too, along with perhaps a lawnmower (definitely would not want to be the guy tied up in the path of that machine). On the flip side, people who have a Buddi app can see what Chucky is looking at, which might be good for a jump scare or two. Both trailers so far show a lot of promise. With some talented folks involved (including Aubrey Plaza of Parks and Recreation and Legion fame, along with Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky), this is shaping up to be a solid new starting point for the series -- even if it does tap into our worst-case-scenario fears over our connected products. We'll find out just what kind of tech-focused carnage Chucky has up his sleeves when Child's Play arrives on June 21st. How to Impeach a President http://bit.ly/2GtYiU7 You never know when you’ll need to impeach a president. Some folks have been hoping to get an impeachment going for the past two years or so; others may want to bookmark this page in case it comes in handy in the future. Here’s what the Constitution says we should do when faced with “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” First, the House proposes articles of impeachmentThe process must start with the House. Article 1, section 2 of the Constitution states that:
The process for doing this isn’t specified, so it’s up to the members of the House how to discuss. The New York Times reports that when Presidents Clinton and Nixon were impeached, the articles were first brought up in the House Judiciary committee. Then, the Senate holds a trialOnce the House votes to impeach, the rest of the action happens in the Senate. The Constitution’s article 1, section 3 states:
So the Senate holds a trial, with the Chief Justice presiding. Technically this isn’t a criminal trial, and the results don’t determine whether the President goes to jail. It takes a two-thirds majority vote from the Senate to remove the President. However, if the President is removed, they can no longer hold office, and they’re now subject to being tried for their crimes the same way as the rest of us. No President has been removed by impeachment (yet)It’s hard enough to get the process under way, but even if the House and Senate both cooperate, removal from office isn’t a sure thing. In fact, it’s never happened (for a President). Andrew Johnson was impeached, acquitted, and served out the rest of his term. Same with Bill Clinton. Richard Nixon resigned before the House could vote on the articles of impeachment that the Judiciary Committee had approved. This year’s iPhones could have much better selfie cameras http://bit.ly/2DjAm3C All of this year’s iPhones could come with upgraded selfie cameras, potentially offering better performance in low light. The details come from a report out today by Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable Apple analyst at TF International Securities, and they were reported by MacRumors. Apple will move from using a 7-megapixel selfie camera to a 12-megapixel selfie camera, without reducing the size of the pixels, according to the report. That would bring the megapixel count in line with the cameras on the rear of the phone. Kuo also sees Apple adding a slightly faster lens on the front, all of which should help with low-light performance. The report also says that Apple will use a black coating on some of the new phones’ lenses to help them blend in with the outside of the device. This isn’t a new idea — Samsung already does this with some front cameras to hide them within the bezel. It doesn’t make the lenses entirely invisible, but it makes their appearance look a bit neater on casual observation. In addition to the selfie camera upgrades, all iPhone models are expected to get rear camera upgrades, too. The next version of Apple’s iPhone XR is said to include dual cameras on the back (adding a telephoto lens), which would be the first time Apple has put two rear cameras on its new entry-level iPhone model. The Wall Street Journal previously reported the possibility of a dual-camera upgrade, too. Kuo also predicts larger pixels on the standard wide-angle rear camera, which could offer better low-light performance, too. As has previously been reported, Kuo reiterates that this year’s biggest camera upgrade for the iPhone is expected to come on the successors to the XS and XS Max. Those models are predicted to get a third camera, a super wide angle, to help them stand out. Many of this year’s flagship phones have included triple-camera systems on the back. Huawei even upped the ante with an additional time-of-flight (ToF) sensor on the back to better detect depth for portrait mode shots. All of those extra lenses add some significant capabilities to these phones, but the real race is what each company can do to process their images. Huawei has delivered some exceptional low-light photos, digital zoom, and improved portrait mode blur. So while the iPhones’ new lenses will be a big deal regardless, what Apple shows it can actually do with them will be what counts. LucidSound’s volume control headphone dials are a smart solution for a nagging gaming issue http://bit.ly/2VRDHOH In today’s digital age, it sometimes feels like hardware has taken a back seat to the software that drives out devices. Button of the Month is a monthly look at what some of those buttons and switches are like on devices old and new, and it aims to appreciate how we interact with our devices on a physical, tactile level. It’s hard to put a good button on wireless headphones. Like I’ve said before, wireless headphones need to include audio playback controls, and they need to do so in a way that makes it easy for wearers to access them without looking. Some headphones have solved this for music listening, like Marshall with its joystick control scheme, but gaming headsets are twice as difficult. Gaming headsets not only need to control game audio, but they also juggle a simultaneous input from voice chat. Some headsets do this with multiple volume wheels or identical feeling buttons, which are hard to use, especially without looking. LucidSound’s gaming headsets accomplish the task perfectly, with a clever two-dial system that turns the frustration of managing multiple audio streams into child’s play. What make LucidSound’s system so good are the large buttons and clear controls. Instead of putting indistinguishable buttons or small, fiddly wheels on the ear cups, LucidSound turns the entire outside surface of both ear cups into buttons. There are two comparatively huge, physically rotating dials that let you adjust the volume, with the middle of each earpiece serving as a giant mute button. LucidSound splits the controls for game audio and voice chat onto either side of the headphones; the left side of the headset controls game audio, letting you raise or lower the ambient noise in the game with the dial, and the right side controls voice chat. The mute buttons are also well thought out. The left side button cuts all audio so that you can hear if, say, your roommate needs to ask you a question, while the right side mutes your own mic so that your snack munching isn’t transmitted to your entire squad. I’ve been using the LucidSound LS35X, which tweaks that formula a bit to work with the Xbox One, specifically, but the conceit still works just as well: huge physical inputs let you balance game and chat audio without having to take your eyes away from the screen. (Due to how the Xbox handles input, one ear adjusts the balance between game audio and chat, while the other does overall volume.) They’re not the absolute best headphones I’ve ever used in terms of build or sound quality, but for gaming, the control scheme helps elevate them over the rest of the pack. Is it a perfect solution for all wireless headphones? Probably not. Music-focused headphones need more controls than just a single button and a volume dial, especially with today’s features like digital assistants, noise cancelation switches, and pairing buttons. But it is a creative solution, and the dial control is one that we’re already starting to see come to more traditional wireless headphone models, like the Surface Headphones. For gaming — which is what LucidSound’s headphones are meant for and truly excel at — it’s a nearly unbeatable control scheme that perfectly factors in the function that it needs and designs a solution specifically to solve it. It’s simple, it’s elegant, and having used it, it’s nearly impossible to go back to any other way of controlling game audio. Gadget News via The Verge http://bit.ly/1jLudMg April 18, 2019 at 09:02AM
