How to add and remove Apple Watch faces in watchOS 7 https://ift.tt/36d9ZLZ With the release of watchOS 7, this is a perfect opportunity for Apple Watch owners to do some spring cleaning and to curate the watch faces they have on their wearable devices. Here's how to add the new watch faces to your Apple Watch, as well as to remove unwanted watch faces. Over the years, Apple has added dozens of watch faces to watchOS. In the latest release, watchOS 7, Apple added a large number of new faces, including Memoji, Typograph, and Chronograph Pro. Since each watch face can be added multiple times with different configurations of colors and complications, the number of faces a user may have at their disposal could be extremely high if they haven't previously taken the time to clear out things they no longer need. That's before you take into account shared watch faces and bought versions. The process of adding and removing faces is relatively easy to accomplish, with each taking a few seconds to do via the Apple Watch itself and through the Watch companion app for iPhone. Adding watch facesHow to add a watch face to the Apple Watch in watchOS 7Swipe left until you reach "New" and the Plus icon. Tap the icon. Scroll the Digital Crown to select the new watch face. Netflix unveils a 'Resident Evil' CG anime series arriving in 2021 https://ift.tt/30coXOu Netflix has more Resident Evil programming in the works than its live-action show. The streaming giant has revealed Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, a “CG anime” series due to premiere sometime in 2021. While the foes of the show (apart from zombies) are still mysterious, the production will revolve around iconic characters Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. The teaser has Claire investigating what looks to be a chemical-obsessed horror, while Leon is rescuing an unknown man. Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi will produce and supervise the series. Veteran anime studio TMS Entertainment (the company that released Akira and Lupin the 3rd) will also produce. Quebico, whose leader Kei Miyamoto produced the Resident Evil: Vendetta movie, will handle the animation production. This is clearly part of Capcom’s campaign to boost the Resident Evil franchise in time for its 25th anniversary. At the same time, it reflects Netflix’s ongoing fondness for game-based shows. The service is clearly betting that familiar names and premises will draw people in. After singing their praises to (aka pushing them on) my family and friends, I thought I'd share info on these cheap, easy-to-clean favorites with you. They're all products I actually own and use in real life and that are simple to incorporate into your cooking routine. Most of all, they're versatile tools you can use daily (I do!), which means they're not just inexpensive, but also high-value. Here are the tools I never want to be without, and how I use them.

The wide, saucer-shaped bowl, long handle and pleasant weight make these beautiful spoons perfect for almost everything -- eating soup, curries, rice dishes, spooning yogurt out of the tub, spooning anything out of any tub, really. My Korean friend calls them "jjigae spoons" (a type of stew) or rice spoons, but in my family, they're known as "life-changing spoons," which is how I first convinced my family to adopt them. I hardly ever use "regular" spoons anymore. You can buy long-handled spoons online or in many Asian markets. My personal preference is to get a set with round handles, not the thin kind with the flat ends. Prices vary, but they're not expensive either way -- say $16 for a pack of 5 good quality spoons, or even $15 for a pack of 8.

I'm sure I could live without a pair of kitchen shears like this one from Henckels (also known for making reliable knives), but I don't particularly want to. A dedicated pair of shears makes opening food bags, cutting meat and fish and trimming green beans dead-easy. Storing them with your knives or utensils keeps them accessible where you need them and eliminates cross-contamination with your other scissors. Sturdy shears can butterfly poultry and this model unhinges for dishwashing -- it's dishwasher safe if in need of thorough sanitizing, but it usually cleans easily with soapy hot water and a sponge. This particular model costs under $20 on sale.
Tovolo
Bench scrapers, also known as pastry or dough scrapers or cutters, are typically used to pry dough off a work surface, though I use mine multiple times a day for either scraping or lifting items from my cutting board to a pan or bowl. I used to use the side of whichever knife I had in my hand, but this useful kitchen tool shovels more diced onions at a time and is safer anyway. I've also used straight-sided bench scrapers, but the offset design is much easier for sliding under a pile of chopped food. It's equally adept at its intended purpose of working with bread and pastry dough. This Tovolo bench scraper is the one I use and costs around $10.

Small bowls are hardly interesting or new and I have plenty of them, especially fluted and ribbed ramekins. But these wonderful dip bowls have made cooking and serving food more of a delight. I just love them. They're useful enough for daily prep and pretty enough to serve on. You can mound a surprising amount of food in the hollow, like lemon zest, olive oil, wasabi or even grated cheese like fresh parmesan. They cost $18 for a set of eight 3-ounce bowls. Here's how I use them:

My dad endearingly referred to these as "rubber fingers." This set of two -- one with a pointy end (pictured) and one that looks more like a paddle, cost $8 and are awesome for scraping, scooping and pushing down all types of food. Think the last little bit of something gooey like peanut butter from the jar, or getting every little bit of beaten egg out of a small bowl. I still use full-size spatulas for large work bowls, pots and pans, but these nonstick minis work better than spoons or my finger and fit really well into drawer dividers. They're machine washable, too.
Lodge via Amazon
I had never heard of a pan or pot scraper until my colleague Rich Brown sang its praises. I have an elaborate and finely-tuned method for steaming and scraping off stuck-on crud from pots, pans and bakeware, but I started getting a lot of time back once I began using this $5 tool -- or $8 for two. This kitchen gadget fits into your palm and easily scrapes away gunk with its flat and curved edges, which can also better reach into corners. Still expect a little sponge work, but mostly to wipe away loosened and leftover stuff. I was amazed with how my Lodge pot scraper obliterates the scum that builds up in a ring around the pan, say the leftovers of reduced marinara. It cuts through residue faster and more efficiently than a hard plastic spatula and it won't gunk up the scrubby side of a sponge with cheese, egg or starchy buildup. I recommend keeping it visible on your sink, near your sponges and dish soap. I initially put it into a drawer and forgot about it, but now it's top of mind.

My friend bought a fancy new dishwasher with built-in wine holders and gave me three purple silicone tubes that help keep your wine glasses safe in the machine. "Here, you like wine," she said. "You should use these." She was right. They may look derpy, but this perfect gift probably saved my wine glasses more than once. You fit one grippy end around your overturned stemware (as pictured) and slide the other end, a hollow tube, over a peg on the bottom rack of your dishwasher. A wire that runs two-thirds the length of the attachment supplies structure. If a glass feels extra wobbly in the center of the bottom rack, I've been known to clip on two of these silicone holders for extra stability, one on either side. I used to hand-wash my wine glasses and still managed to break one here or there. Not anymore. It costs about $12 for a set of eight. I've run them in the dishwasher on a weekly basis for almost two years.

Great for elegantly draining pasta, reaching for items on the top shelf, juicing lemons and even cleaning window blinds. A pair of 9-inch or 12-inch silicone-tipped tongs costs about $15 and has become a trusty kitchen companion that does far more for a chef than just flip browning veggies and meat. Here are seven clever uses for kitchen tongs.

I love a small saucepan for so many reasons, including frying perfectly round eggs one at a time and reducing broth and sauces. Melting butter and making modest quantities of caramel or hot milk and cream are also great in an itty-bitty pan, especially if you're trying to keep a small amount of liquid from evaporating too quickly. I bought a "cup measuring pan" that's a lot like this one, with a long handle, and I like it, though it's not as thick as some of my other kitchen pots. I'd also happily consider a butter melting pot for butter, sauces, warming milk and boiling single eggs, but I currently use a tiny milk frothing jug for that, intended for espresso. Whichever pan you get should cost between $15 and $25, tops. Mine was about $15. The TikTok download ban ‘would be devastating,’ attorneys argue in court https://ift.tt/3mWa4K9 Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Attorneys for TikTok argued Sunday morning during a dial-in hearing that a ban by the Trump administration would be “devastating,” and urged a judge to block it until the entire case can be decided. TikTok’s attorney said the ban that would prevent new downloads of TikTok from Apple and Google’s app stores at 11:59PM ET today was essentially “shutting down speech.” But the government’s lawyers argued that First Amendment claims by TikTok don’t apply, because the Trump administration considers the app a national security risk. On August 6th, President Trump issued an order saying the security concerns about TikTok and WeChat, both China-based apps, constituted a national emergency. He invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which lets him ban transactions between US and foreign entities, President Trump then issued an order August 14th giving ByteDance 90 days to either sell or spin off its TikTok business in the US. That order is set to go into effect on November 12th and will effectively halt the app’s operations. On September 18th, the Commerce Department issued an order to block transactions with both TikTok parent company ByteDance and WeChat, effective September 20th. But on September 19th, a tentative deal was announced that would create a new company, TikTok Global, based in the US and tasked with processing and storage for all US-based TikTok users. Oracle would become TikTok’s trusted security partner under the terms of the deal. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross then delayed the ban until September 27th at 11:59PM. The app store ban is “arbitrary and capricious,” TikTok attorney John Hall argued Sunday. The company also says that the August 6th order should not apply, since IEEPA excludes information and communication technologies. “This is one of the fastest growing apps in the world, and those new users are the lifeblood of this business, which is true of any social media platform,” said Hall. “If it disappears from the app stores, the effect would be devastating with respect to users, content, creators, and would damage its reputation with advertisers.” Lawyers for the US government argued that preventing new users on the app would allow the Commerce department to address the most serious national security risks. But such a ban would also block existing users from receiving new security updates to the app. US District Judge Carl Nichols said he planned to issue a decision in the case publicly before 11:59PM, but would issue his opinion under seal so both sides could review it in case any sensitive information needs to be redacted. Let's talk aesthetic Home screens, Apple Watches, iPhone 12, and more https://ift.tt/30eTueC It's all about being "aesethetic AF" these days, whether on your iPhone, or maybe a mechanical keyboard. After taking the last few weeks off, I must say, it's good to be back. And let me tell you — it was nice to be able to watch an Apple event like the rest of you, while my colleagues dominated with the Apple September event coverage! I haven't actually watched an Apple event like everyone else in like, ever, so it was a nice change. But I'm totally ready for the iPhone 12 event next month, that I can tell you. So while I was gone, Apple has released the new Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE. Our own Luke Filipowicz has reviewed the Apple Watch SE, and I highly recommend giving it a look. The Apple Watch SE starts at only $279 and it offers an incredible amount of value for first-time Watch owners, or those who are upgrading from an older Apple Watch (Series 0, 1, 2, and 3 primarily). But if you want the latest and greatest, then the Apple Watch Series 6 is a great option, and it only starts at $399. Our own Lory Gil reviewed the Apple Watch Series 6 herself, and she highly recommends it. Since I have a titanium Apple Watch Series 5 Edition, I don't think the blood oxygen monitoring is significant enough to get me to upgrade, even though those new blue and red case colors look hot. Honestly, as a diabetic, I'm waiting for the day that an Apple Watch that will be able to tell me my blood glucose levels, because pricking my finger multiple times a day sucks. Apple also dropped iOS 14 and watchOS 7, which I have been loving. While my iPhone Home screen has largely remained unchanged for years, I'm especially loving the new widgets and App Library features. It's just as I said months ago — iOS 14 has reinvented the Home screen. I've hidden all of my app pages from page two and beyond, and made sure to toggle on the Setting so all new app downloads just go to the App Library, rather than clutter up my Home screen. I can keep all of my apps and still have a minimalistic Home screen setup — it's all I've ever wanted. And while it isn't for everyone, I've found a few new widgets that are practical on my Home screen, since they give me useful information at a glance. Now, thanks to the whole widgets thing, people have jumped aboard the "aesthetic AF" hype train and have begun to customize their Home screens with colorful, personalized widgets and app icons through Shortcuts. I'm not a big fan of this new trend, because while there are a few cool looking ones, a lot of them look a bit too garish, and it just highlights the limitations of customization on iOS. If you want a cool theme on your phone, you're going to want to change the icon for apps through Shortcuts, and right now, this means that Shortcuts has to open up before you get to your app. The process slows things down, and honestly, just doesn't seem worth it to me — and you can't even get notification badges on icons changed this way. However, with customization being the hot new thing on iPhones, hopefully Apple takes notice and makes the entire process more streamlined in a future version of iOS. I would like to see something like an icon uploader for an app's settings, rather than having to go through Shortcuts every time. And hey, maybe we can get custom Apple Watch faces sooner rather than later? As I was on vacation, I did end up falling into the rabbit hole that is mechanical keyboards. In fact, I reviewed the Keychron K2 V2, which I love using, and it's my first mechanical board. I like to think of it my "gateway" keyboard, because I spent hours just looking at r/MechanicalKeyboards and admiring different boards and keycap sets (goodbye money, it was nice knowing you). Still, I think Keychron makes some nice quality keyboards, and they are a great introduction to mechanicals, especially for Mac users. Keychron boards also have Bluetooth wireless connectivity, which I have learned is hard to find in a mechanical keyboard. Anyways, just a few more weeks until the iPhone 12! And thanks to the latest leak with Silicone Case stickers, it looks like we will indeed be getting four iPhone 12 models: iPhone 12 mini, a regular iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm not that happy that the Pro model is no longer going to be 5.8-inches, but that's probably what I'll be going with. Until next time!

The move brings down curtains on the controversial priority plan issue, which saw the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) initiating a probe into telco's claims of priority network and faster data speeds for premium customers. Last month, the regulator had slapped a show-cause notice on VIL over its priority mobile plan, saying the tariff offer lacked transparency and was "misleading" and not in compliance with regulatory framework. Faced with regulatory heat, VIL recently dropped the faster data speed claims which formed a prominent part of its pay-more-for-priority-treatment offering and filed a revised plan with Trai. The regulator has now informed VIL that "the authority has decided not to proceed with the investigation/ further inquiry". Trai letter, seen by , noted that the operator has informed that the earlier RedX planhas been discontinued and that a new tariff plan of RedX, without the claim of priority 4G network feature with faster speed, has been filed. "It has been further stated that VIL believes the same would address the concerns of the authority and based on the same, VIL requested the authority to grant closure to the pending enquiry," the regulator said. Other might be stuck with a TV with an older smart operating system that has lost support for certain important applications. One example of this was Samsung last year announcing that its smart TVs manufactured in 2010 and 2011 would lose access to Netflix. Having to hook up a laptop or copy files to a USB to watch on your TV every time can be a tedious undertaking, but a smart TV box offers a hassle-free, plug-and-play solution to make a TV with an HDMI input smart. These devices are effectively compact computers with an operating system (usually Google’s Android TV) that allows for the playback of content via apps or through external media. Features to considerThere is a wide range of options for cheap smart TV boxes with Android TV available in South Africa. Aside from the required hardware for solid performance, there are several features to consider which could have a significant impact on your experience with a smart TV box or stick. Firstly, Google-certified devices offer support for all official apps as well as official versions of the Android TV OS. If a box is not Google-certified, then applications like DStv Now will not be available to download directly from the Google Play Store. In certain instances, it may be possible to side-load the app, although this does not guarantee it will work as intended. Another factor to weigh is what type of remote you’ll be getting with the device, as well as whether the box supports Bluetooth connectivity. The addition of full-size keyboard may make it easier for you to search for and find your content, improving your overall experience. Bluetooth support will also allow you to connect wireless peripherals like a mouse or keyboard to ease navigation and input. Smart boxes under R1,000We’ve put together a list of 10 of the cheapest TV boxes and sticks available in South Africa for those looking to add smart features to their TV.
