Motorola’s Moto Z gets a 360-degree camera mod http://ift.tt/2vFxtVH The Moto Z was a surprise hit for Motorola — so much so that the company made the swappable, modular-backed phone its flagship product with the Z2 Play’s arrival last month. But the novel feature has always been hampered by the fact that there just aren’t that many useful Mods. While the company sold “millions” of that first phone, it’s only moved between one and two of the swappable backs for every handset. Today changes the math a bit, with the arrival of the Moto Z2 Force Edition, featuring a shatterproof screen and bigger battery, along with the 360 Camera Moto Mod — one of the more compelling Mods to date. Like its predecessors, the new Mod snaps on magnetically to the back of the handset, but with this one, a two-sided, circular camera juts out the top, like a small periscope. The new Mod shoots 360-degree video in 4K, like the new version of the Gear 360 that Samsung announced back in May alongside the Galaxy S8. Though, at $299, the Mod is a full $70 more expensive than Samsung’s model — and, of course, it only works with the Moto Z line. That speaks to one of the bigger issues with the Moto Z’s take on modularity — while all of the Mods are designed to be compatible with all versions of the Z, the system’s design defines the constraints of the phone’s form factor. Andy Rubin helpfully pointed that out when he debuted the Essential phone in late May, along with its own $199 360-degree camera. That upcoming device features a more adaptable take on modular design. Rather than requiring it to occupy the full back, Essential’s system just plugs in a pair of pins near the top of the phone. That means the handset can change screen size in the future (as handsets are wont to do) and still be compatible with the accessory. Motorola, on the other hand, seems to have painted itself into a bit of a corner on this one. That said, one key thing the Moto Z line has going for it is a year’s worth of shipping products. We’re likely still a couple of weeks out from the first Essential phone, and the Z is already a proven product, and the first genuinely successful modular phone. Motorola’s delivered a nice piece of hardware, and while the selection of Mods still isn’t huge, it’s certainly growing. The company is already offering a JBL speaker, a Hasselblad camera, a projector, a new gaming pad and a bunch of different battery packs. But now that the novelty of the first generation has worn off, Motorola needs to prove that Mods are enough of a value-add over standard phone accessories. After all, with something like the battery back, the Mod isn’t doing a lot that a case from a company like Mophie can’t already do on a standard, non-modular phone. With the 360-camera, the Mod form factor is a trade-off. You can view what you’re recording in real time on the phone’s display, but you have to hold the phone in a hand or prop it up in order to use it. There are plenty of situations where it would be a heck of a lot handier to have a standalone camera (like the Gear 360) that you can place on a flat surface for extended shoots. Trying to shoot time-lapse that way sounds like a bit of a nightmare. The long-term health of the Moto Z line is going to depend on the breadth and usefulness of the Mods that are on the market. The Z2 Force looks to be another solid piece of hardware from the company, with a rugged design, two rear-facing 12-megapixel cameras and the latest Snapdragon processor, but the Mods are how the company is attempting to set itself apart. The 360 camera adds to the growing selection, but it’s hardly the killer app the company’s been searching for to make modularity more than just a cool novelty. Both the Moto Z2 Force and the 360 Camera Mod are due out August 10th through the major U.S. carriers. Digital Trends via TechCrunch https://techcrunch.com July 25, 2017 at 10:16AM

Uber is going to provide accident insurance in France for free http://ift.tt/2tWMMqJ Uber drivers and delivery persons in France are automatically going to get covered by accident insurance over the coming months. Uber has partnered with French insurance company Axa on this insurance product. It’ll go live this fall and it’s going to be free for independent workers. Hold your horses for a minute though. Before you think Uber is a nice company and wants to help its drivers, as ITespresso noticed, Uber is just complying with France’s latest labor law. Starting in January 2018, tech platforms and marketplaces will have to cover independent workers making more than $6,000 per year on that platform (€5099.64). Emmanuel Macron has also promised during his presidential campaign that independent workers would be able to apply to unemployment benefits just like full-time employees. The current government is working on another labor law right now. While Axa and Uber didn’t say much about their new partnership, the upcoming insurance product is going to cover medical expenses, disability indemnities and survivor benefits. It’s still unclear if Axa is just going to cover medical expenses in case a driver can’t drive anymore, or more than that. But Uber calls it “accident insurance”, not “medical insurance.” As for disability indemnities and survivor benefits, many French companies provide life insurance (assurance prévoyance) as part of benefits packages. This should be something similar for Uber drivers. Uber, Deliveroo and other companies relying heavily on independent workers are facing criticism when it comes to working conditions, benefits and job security. Recent labor laws indicate that the French government wants to protect independent workers as much as possible. The U.K. government is also looking at ways to fix those loopholes. Today’s news is just about France, but there’s a trend. Uber is launching personal injury and illness insurance in the U.K. — but it’s not free. Drivers in New York are also covered by Uber’s insurance policy — but you’re only covered when you’re driving for Uber. How They Pulled Off 'Atomic Blonde''s* Killer Action Sequence http://ift.tt/2vFHmT8 Charlize Theron was badass in Mad Max: Fury Road, but she gets even Furiosa in Atomic Blonde. Toward the end of the Cold War thriller that opens Friday, the camera follows Theron (playing an MI6 spy) up an elevator, onto a stairwell where she’s attacked by Russian thugs, into an apartment where she employs a hot plate as a weapon, and eventually out onto the street and into a police car for a high-speed chase. At just under 10 minutes long, the bravura sequence is a living, bleeding embodiment of director David Leitch’s mission: Use analog techniques to make action cinema feel real again. While the set piece appears to be one uninterrupted take, Leitch stitched it together using old-school camera tricks like whip pans and wipes to make the transitions seamless—digital effects were a last resort. Even when Theron’s character tumbles down a flight of stairs: “That’s not digital,” Leitch says. “That’s 100 percent Charlize’s head bashing into the wall.” That’s not 100 percent wall, though—it’s well-disguised foam rubber. It’s showy, sure, but Leitch says his technique isn’t a gimmick. “You get numb in these fight scenes where everybody feels invincible,” he says. “There should be some real consequences, so the audience will feel it and connect with her emotionally.” It’s the kind of thing more Hollywood action directors should be fighting for. Shocking Study Finds Traumatic Neurological Disorder in 110 of 111 Donated NFL Player Brains http://ift.tt/2v4LAGY No one ever said playing football was good for your brain. By this point, most sports fans have heard that those who suffer repeated concussions could possibly also suffer early-onset dementia and other neurological symptoms. This, in fact, could have lead Kansas City Chief’s Jovan Belcher to kill his girlfriend and himself. The leading culprit is chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurological disorder that seems to be common in those who play sports that lead to lots of head injuries. There still isn’t conclusive proof that more football playing means more or worse cases of CTE—the science is still in the stage of identifying correlations, not causation. But a new study’s results are shocking. Of 202 football player brains donated to science and reviewed by researchers, 177 had CTE. Of 111 NFL player brains, 110 had it. Advertisement “In a sense, the press and the attention that we get has been ahead of the science. These numbers have been floating around but haven’t been published,” study author Jesse Mez from Boston University told Gizmodo. But, he added, “the number is striking.” Advertisement Mez immediately warned of a few caveats to this study. The researchers didn’t design the study to estimate CTE’s prevalence in football, nor are they trying to establish how football playing can change the severity of the symptoms. There’s a selection bias, meaning all of these players donated their brains to science because there was a worry they might have suffered from the disease—nearly all of them already showed symptoms. The point of the study was instead to understand the clinical features and pathology of brains at risk for CTE. The Boston University School of Medicine and VA Boston Healthcare System set up a brain bank in 2008, where a requirement for donors was that they had experienced repeated head trauma. The researchers took scans of those brains and analyzed tissues in search of specific markers of CTE. One of those markers: a protein called the tau, which changes its chemical structure in a way that causes it to tangle up with other similarly-altered tau proteins. The scientists were able to divide the cases into four stages based on these clumps of tangled “ptau,” or phosphorylated tau proteins, as well as other more advanced degenerative symptoms throughout the brain. Stages of CTE worsened from one to four, according to the paper published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Advertisement The study “represents a major contribution to this effort” to better describe CTE, Gil Rabinovici from the University of California, San Francisco Department of Neurology wrote in an editorial for JAMA. “Nevertheless, fundamental questions about the disorder remain unresolved.” What is the prevalence of the disease in the general population, for example, and how does the risk of the disease scale with the type, level, and frequency of the contact sport played? Advertisement The NFL has a complicated history when it comes to concussion research. One study found the organization had tried to influence research and left out data in studies and had possible ties to the tobacco industry (like sharing lobbyists and lawyers), according to New York Times reports. Since then, the NFL has donated millions to the NIH to help fund research—that money partially funded the new study, said Mez. But even some of those donations have been subject to controversy. NFL Spokesperson Brian McCarthy passed Gizmodo a statement, saying that “Case studies such as those compiled in this updated paper are important to further advancing the science and progress related to head trauma. The medical and scientific communities will benefit from this publication and the NFL will continue to work with a wide range of experts to improve the health of current and former NFL athletes.” Advertisement But far more research is clearly needed, because while the association between head trauma and CTE is now obvious, it’s still just an association and an obvious risk factor, rather than a proven cause. Mez thought we were only at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding the disease. He noted that in mild cases, the symptoms seem excessively severe compared with the level of brain abnormality. There could be “more pathology we’re not measuring, regions we’re not examining,” he said. “It could be that the tau is the marker of a lot of other things going on. It’s important for us to understand that too.” He noted that Alzheimer’s research is decades ahead of CTE research. Mez didn’t say you should stop playing football. Instead, “everyone needs to be aware this is a potential risk.” But, he admits, “we don’t quite understand what that risk is.” Advertisement [JAMA] Digital Trends via Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com July 25, 2017 at 10:06AM

‘Game of Thrones’ premiere sent HBO NOW half a million downloads, 3x increase in revenue http://ift.tt/2tGKhxE HBO’s “Game of Thrones” isn’t just a cultural phenomenon – it’s also a driving force for the company’s over-the-top service aimed at cord cutters, HBO NOW. According to new data from app store analytics firm App Annie, the HBO NOW streaming app was downloaded over 500,000 times in the first week following the Season 7 premiere. This translated into a massive increase in subscription revenue for the app, allowing it to snag the number three spot on the ‘Top Grossing’ chart across both iOS and Google Play. On the day of the “Game of Thrones” premiere, Sunday July 16, 2017, the increase in revenue was so substantive that HBO NOW jumped up the top grossing chart by combined revenue by 11 ranks in the U.S., compared with the day prior. While Netflix in the second quarter became the top grossing non-game app across both app stores, HBO NOW’s move this month was even more impressive. It didn’t just become the top grossing non-game app – it beat out all the other games on the revenue charts except for Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans. That means it also became the #1 non-game app by combined iOS and Google Play revenue across the U.S. app stores on the day of premiere, App Annie notes. The revenue increases were tied to a large jump in downloads from users who weren’t just opting for HBO NOW’s free trial, but signing up and subscribing immediately. On the day of the premiere, HBO NOW saw 4 times the downloads compared with the average daily downloads of the 30 days prior. More remarkably, it was able to sustain this daily download bump for four days after the premiere. This led to over 500,000 downloads of the app across both the Apple App Store and Google Play in the U.S., and a 3x increase in revenue on the day of the premiere. The interest in “Game of Thrones” isn’t just limited to the U.S. While HBO NOW’s streaming app is U.S.-only, the HBO GO app is available in several regions outside the U.S. And it, too, saw downloads increase by significant numbers. Daily downloads for HBO GO peaked on July 16, 2017 and July 18, 2017, at well over 3x the number of downloads compared with the average daily downloads of HBO GO in the 30 days prior, in both the U.S. and globally. While a jump in downloads and revenue are to be expected for a show as popular as “Game of Thrones” – especially considering the premiere broke HBO’s streaming records – they also indicate a different sort of billing cycle when it comes to cord cutters. Clearly, there’s a large audience who subscribe to HBO mainly “Game of Thrones,” then cancel that subscription when the season ends. That means HBO will need to figure out its longer term content strategy in order to reduce subscriber churn and keep the series’ fans from leaving HBO when their favorite show one day finally concludes. HBO has to some extent addressed its plans on this front, saying it understands how it’s important to have a wide range of offerings for streaming service users – not just top performers like “Game of Thrones,” but also other content, like big-ticket dramas, documentaries, and sports programs, for example. “Usage is going across a wide range of categories — it’s not just ‘Westworld’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Night Of’,” HBO CEO Richard Plepler said in February, in a report by Variety. “We’re in the business of curating great content. We’re very encouraged by what we’ve seen in churn,” he added. The company, at that time, also said the HBO NOW streaming service had surpassed 2 million subscribers in the U.S., an increase from 800,000 by the end of 2016. However, HBO NOW is no longer the only way for cord cutters to (legally) watch HBO. The network is also available as an add-on subscription across a number of internet TV services, like HBO, Sling TV, DirecTV Now, and as a standalone subscription via Amazon Channels. According to a report this month from Financial Times (via Decider), this expanded access translates into nearly 3.5 million digital subscribers who don’t pay for HBO through a traditional pay TV provider, like cable or satellite. That’s only an okay number for this still relatively new streaming service – though it’s worth pointing out that Netflix added more subscribers in the past quarter alone than all of HBO’s digital subscriber base. And that 3.5 million figure is just about 3 percent of HBO’s 131 million worldwide subscribers, 34 million of which are in the U.S, noted Decider. As more consumers cut the cord, there’s a big chance that a number of them will be lost to HBO entirely – especially when its $15/month over-the-top pricing is so much higher than its streaming competitors. And if HBO doesn’t find its next “Game of Thrones,” it may struggle to bring its former subscribers back after they ditch pay TV. See how IndyCar made its race cars sleeker and safer for 2018 http://ift.tt/2tGKYXH The Indianapolis 500 and the race series it spawned used to be a showcase for innovation, but the modern Verizon IndyCar Series limits teams to one chassis design, and one of two engines. Next season, the cars will get even more similar. IndyCar’s 2018 race car puts an end to so-called “aero kit” body kits specific to engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda. Instead, all teams will use the same pair of aero kits, meaning all cars will look identical. The new car features two body designs, one for high-speed ovals, the other for shorter ovals, road courses, and street circuits. IndyCar previously gave Chevy and Honda free reign to develop their own aero kits, but the experiment didn’t go well. Both manufacturers’ designs were rather ungainly looking. Initially, the Honda aero kit also had a major performance disadvantage, while a low-drag version of the Chevy kit produced so little downforce that it sent some cars flying through air in its first few outings. After those results, IndyCar literally went back to the drawing board. Race cars usually emphasize function over form, but designers actually put a lot of effort into making the 2018 IndyCar look cool. The design is a bit more streamlined, and is inspired by the popular “low-line” IndyCars from the 1990s, according to series organizers. Under the skin is the same IR-12 chassis from Italian race-car manufacturer Dallara that all IndyCar teams have used since 2012. Engines are unchanged as well: teams will continue to use 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 motors from Chevy or Honda. IndyCar expects performance to be largely similar to the old car, but because the 2018 car uses a different arrangement of aerodynamic aids, it should be easier for drivers to pass each other. IndyCar also claims safety improvements. Side-impact protection has been improved by redesigning the side pods, series organizers say. In simulations, the cars have shown less of a tendency to become airborne in spins, and the less-complicated front wings will produce less debris in crashes. The car can also be equipped with a windshield, something IndyCar is considering to reduce the risk of driver head injuries. IndyCar drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Oriol Servia will begin testing the new car immediately. IndyCar hopes to deliver the 2018-spec body kits to teams in November, in preparation for next season.

Gresso’s insane iPhone case is so durable a grizzly bear can stand on it http://ift.tt/2tzHDpm If you adore your iPhone 7 and want to make sure it stays protected, while lavishing it with some love at the same time, the name at the top of your shopping list should be Gresso. It’s a luxury phone brand also known for its custom smartphone projects, and for producing limited edition phone accessories. This is the Gresso Magnum, a beautiful, and quite insane, case for your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. It’s going to cost you $500, but is made from titanium and gold, so your iPhone is really going to know you love it. The case comes in two parts. First is an inner flexible TPU section for absorbing shocks and to protect the screen when the phone’s face down on the table. The real standout piece is the grade-5 titanium shell that attaches to the TPU case, providing style and immense durability. How much? Gresso claims the Magnum will withstand up to 550 pounds (250kg) of force. To put this into perspective, it should easily cope with a full-grown bear standing on it — a scenario many of us here at Digital Trends deal with on a regular basis. Additionally, the combined toughness of the titanium and TPU shell means the phone will survive a 10 meter drop.

Gresso’s lattice design looks superb, and keeps the weight of the case down. It really added very little additional bulk or heft to our iPhone 7, while the striking looks attracted many admiring looks and comments. There’s an 18k gold plate embedded in the titanium with Gresso’s logo embossed on it, along with the limited edition number. Just 999 are made of each style, and it takes Gresso’s engineers eight hours to create each one. They arrive in a presentation case covered in black leather. Fitting the case is easy, but removing it requires the use of a special key to pry the two sections apart. When it’s on, the iPhone’s volume keys are hidden under a single TPU strip that sits flush against the side of the case. This does make it more difficult to locate them than usual, but the sleep/wake key is raised up and doesn’t suffer from the same problem. The lattice work takes some getting used to when holding the phone, as it’s totally different from the smooth or textured cases we’re more familiar with. The version you see in the pictures is polished titanium, but a version with a black PVD coating is also available for a stealth look that’s also popular in the watch industry. It’ll cost you $600, rather than the $500 for the regular version, and the price is the same regardless of whether you choose the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus case. Both can be purchased through Amazon. It’s an outrageous price for a phone case, regardless of what it’s made from; but we love the unusual design and its ability to really protect our device. If you’ve got the money sitting around, you won’t be disappointed with the Gresso Magnum.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy hands-on review http://ift.tt/2uW3gDD There’s one burning question to be asked about Uncharted: The Lost Legacy: Is this the future of Uncharted? Though originally planned to be a downloadable expansion of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Lost Legacy has morphed into a standalone side-story of Naughty Dog’s treasure-seeking action-adventure franchise. One that abandons the series long-standing protagonist Nathan Drake for a new lead, Chloe Frazer, a side character who’s popped up in the franchise before but who has never been the focus of an Uncharted story before. Instead of adding to Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy tells a completely unrelated tale. For Uncharted fans, the inevitable speculation about why Naughty Dog would release a new, “smaller”, standalone Uncharted game — Lost Legacy is still 10 hours long, according to developer Naughty Dog — staring side characters led to one conclusion: Trying out new characters seems like it could be a test balloon to find out how the franchise might fare with new characters. According to Naughty Dog, that’s not the case, though. Speaking to Digital Trends at an event in Los Angeles last week, Lost Legacy co-writer Josh Scherr said the company currently doesn’t have anything planned for the continuation of Uncharted. Before anybody can start to worry about what’s next for Uncharted, he said, Naughty Dog has to finish its next game, The Last of Us Part II. “You know, never say never,” Scherr said about the continuation of the Uncharted franchise. “We would have to have a good reason and a good project and everything else like that, but right now nobody’s thinking about that.” So what makes Uncharted: The Lost Legacy different from Uncharted 4? As Scherr and Director Kurt Margenau explain it, the shift from Uncharted 4 downloadable content to standalone game was more a factor of its evolution as it was being made. Scherr said that, as with The Last of Us before it, Naughty Dog wanted to do add-on content for Uncharted 4 because it makes for a good way to transition the company to a new game – in this case, The Last of Us Part II. Not everyone can start on the new project, so giving some developers at the studio a smaller project to work on while the next big game ramps up keeps them busy. But as the team worked on Lost Legacy, it kept changing and getting bigger. “At the time, like Kurt said, we were just thinking of doing a small add-on story (to Uncharted 4), you know, a couple hours long, no big deal, nice and easy,” he said. “But the thing is, as we wrapped Uncharted 4 and we realized we were really just putting a nice shiny bow on Nathan Drake’s story, we realized we didn’t want to do sort of an addendum to it. It just seemed superfluous.” Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Compared ToSo Lost Legacy became more of an Uncharted game unto itself, from a story standpoint. But from a mechanical and gameplay point of view, it’s basically a larger exploration of some of the big changes Naughty Dog introduced into the franchise in Uncharted 4. Back on the road againIn Lost Legacy, Chloe teams up with Uncharted 4 mercenary leader Nadine Ross, now a partner instead of a villain. The duo has teamed up to find an ancient treasure, the lost tusk of Ganesh, in India’s Western Ghats mountain range. As in every Uncharted, the pair have competition: They occasionally run into a new, curiously well-armed militia — this time, they’re rebels — led by a former Indian government official named Asav, who’s also looking for the tusk. Facebook reportedly building smart speaker with touch screen http://ift.tt/2uxhx7G Facebook may launch its own smart home gadget to get you messaging more friends and looking at more photos. DigiTimes reports from Taiwan that Facebook is building a 15-inch touch screen smart speaker. Citing sources from the “upstream supply chain”, Chinese iPhone manufacturer Pegatron is building the device for a Q1 2018 launch, with a small pilot run having already been produced. It’s said to have been designed by Facebook secretive new hardware lab Building 8, using an LG in-cell touch screen with magnesium-aluminum-alloy chassis. While no further details are known about the speaker’s functionality, it could potentially extend Facebook’s feed of photos and videos plus its dominant messaging platform into the bedroom, living room, or kitchen. A request for comment received no response from Facebook before press time. The Facebook speaker might work as a digital photo frame when inactive, piping in new photos or videos to brighten up the home. Through voice commands, users could potentially Like or leave comments on this content. It would also be sensible for Facebook to allow messaging from the speaker, via voice-dictated text messages, VoIP audio calls, or video calling. As of February, 400 million of Facebook Messenger 1.2 billion users communicate via Facebook audio and video calling ever month. A touch screen smart speaker could become a high-tech home phone alternative that’s easy for younger kids and grandparents to use.
Amazon is already trying to barge into the home communications market with its new Amazon Echo Show version of its smart speaker, which lets people video call each other over its screen. Google has its own Google Home speaker and Apple is preparing to launch the HomePod. But none of them have a ubiquitous cross-device instant messaging platform with a comprehensive social graph the way Facebook does. Facebook could potentially earn money directly from selling a smart speaker. There could be a way to pipe ads into the screen, though it might feel obtrusive to have a changing billboard in your home. The social network already has TV apps that run on Android, Apple, and Roku’s TV hardware. Late last year Facebook admitted it planned to sell ads that would appear on its TV apps. A touch screen smart speaker could be another place those ads run. But if such a device got people browsing and messaging on Facebook more, it could lock them deeper into its ecosystem where they’ll inevitably see Facebook’s ads on its smart phone. Facebook’s Building 8 had been quiet since launching in 2016 under the helm of former Google ATAP leader Regina Dugan. At this year’s Facebook F8 conference, Building 8 revealed it was working on a technology to let people type just by thinking, and another to help the visually impaired “hear” through their skin. Most recently, Business Insider reported that Facebook secured a patent for a modular hardware device that could be a phone, though that technology could let people snap extra components onto a smart speaker. The one major missing piece for Facebook to succeed with a smart speaker is voice recognition technology. In September 2016, Facebook’s head of Messenger David Marcus told me on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt that Facebook wasn’t focused on voice technology, but it may have been secretly hard at work on voice tech or grown its interest since then. Facebook acquired voice command developer platform Wit.ai in 2015. If Facebook can build a gadget that releases its beloved News Feed and Messenger from the confines of your phone, and makes them accessible with a glance or word at any time, it may have found how to make us spend even more time on its social network.
