Google has changed so it’s time to reconsider what ranking factors are and how that affects SEO. Nearly 20 years ago, ranking a web page was straightforward. It was a recipe. When Googlers said there were over 200 ranking factors it was a concept the SEO community could easily understand. It fit the ranking recipe of links, title tags, headings, etc. Yet for the past few years we’ve known that Google ranks web pages that don’t even contain the keywords on the page. Today, Google and the SEO industry focuses on satisfying users. It really may be time to reconsider what we mean when we talk about ranking factors. It’s entirely possible that Google has left the room and turned off the lights on the anchor text and keyword SEO party.
