Bauer and EOS Bring 3D Printed Digital Foam Inserts to Hockey https://ift.tt/wInd9Vg American football isn’t the only sport benefiting from 3D printed helmets; ice hockey has joined the party too. Bauer and EOS, leaders in ice hockey and additive manufacturing respectively, recently announced their collaboration to bring 3D printing into Bauer’s MyBauer custom equipment program and showcased the third generation of Bauer’s REAKT hockey helmet with an EOS printed liner. This partnership could help push mass-customization to market faster and help protect players from the Lake Nokomis Pond Hockey Championship all the way to the National Hockey League. Bauer had been searching for the right company to help incorporate additive manufacturing into its production lines and give the company a leg up on the competition. With EOS’s experience in the field and its patented Digital Foam— a meta material that can elicit different foam characteristics by tuning individual voxels — a deal was quickly brokered between the businesses. After iterating through many designs, the fruits of their labor ripened, and now the 3D printed helmet liners are prominently displayed in the third generation of Bauer’s REAKT Helmets. These Digital Foam inserts offer better breathability, improved comfort, and are lighter compared to previous generations, coming in around 580 grams. The helmets will also lose their typical “Small”, “Medium”, and “Large” sizing and will instead be customized to the individual player’s noggin. On the consumer side, the process to get one is pretty simple. All a player has to do is spend a few minutes having their head scanned, and then wait until their helmet is shipped to their door. On the manufacturing side, however, there’s a bit more involvement. After the head is scanned, a computer aided design (CAD) model is made based on the information gathered, which is then sent off to print. The helmet inserts are made via selective laser sintering (SLS) and individual lattice structures are customized to provide the best protection for the athlete. Once done, the inserts can be dyed to match a team’s colors and final assembly is done at Bauer’s facilities in Quebec.
As this partnership grows, so will the information the companies gather. Like Riddell’s efforts on American football helmets, EOS and Bauer will continue to iterate on their lattice structures and materials to provide the best protection in hockey. We are excited to see how both companies continue to incorporate additive manufacturing into their work flows, and maybe soon they will expand from just helmets, and also incorporate EOS’s digital foam into their skates and other athletic equipment too. UAE Defense Fund and Saab Enter Agreement for Aerospace 3D Printing https://ift.tt/85OEzeI Tawazun Economic Council, a venture capital arm of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE’s) military, has announced an agreement with Swedish aerospace/defense conglomerate Saab, to develop additive manufacturing (AM) applications for UAE Air Force and Air Defense (AFAD) spare parts. Saab has extensive experience in printing aerospace spares, and in 2017, the company was one of 11 cofounders of Additive Manufacturing Excellence for Industry (AMEXCI), a consortium including some of Sweden’s largest corporations. Relatedly, Tawazun announced its partnership with Saab only a few days after the former revealed a project quite similar to AMEXCI: ‘Sindan’, the Emirati Center of Excellence for 3D Printing. Sindan, located in Abu Dhabi and already operational, is the product of collaboration between Tawazun and companies in the UAE. Although not mentioned in the announcement, one of the companies is likely Al Seer Marine, a maritime firm with direct ties to the UAE defense establishment, which just unveiled a 3D printed drone boat last week. Given the UAE’s growing interest in applying AM to the maritime sector, it is notable that Saab also has a sizable presence in naval production: not only could the relationship expand to areas beyond aerospace, the technology transfer involved between Tawazun and Saab could very well become a two-way street. That would be especially valuable in the context of Saab’s role in producing submarines, since AM has been attracting increasing interest for use in submarine output. Beyond the technological side of things, NATO considers the UAE to be a crucial ally, and Sweden (along with Finland) is currently working hard to become a member of the Western military alliance. Sweden’s path to membership has hit a rough patch lately, due to objections from Turkey. On the other hand, the US seems to be using Turkey’s desire for new F-16s as leverage to dampen its anti-Swedish stance. Along those same lines, Saab’s moving to tighten its relations with the UAE — specifically concerning a timely topic in military news like AM — could be just the sort of thing that puts Sweden’s membership on a faster track. In any case, the Saab-Tawazun partnership is a solid reminder of how critical advanced manufacturing is to relationships between nations. OUTLAW3D: 3D Printing Fake Number Plates in Australia https://ift.tt/GLkE57u License plate cloning is not uncommon. This type of vehicle identity theft which involves copying a car’s registration number and assigning it to another vehicle is typically used for illegal activity and has serious repercussions on the number plate’s registered owner, who will have to prove the plate was cloned to avoid hefty fines. Car cloning is becoming a growing concern worldwide. For example, London registered a staggering 857% increase from 2021 to 2022, claiming there is “cloning crimewave.” Similarly, Florida says vehicle cloning is on the rise, while New Zealand has sounded the alarm about this problem for a couple of years. However, it used to be that license plate cloning was more of a physical crime, whereby the actual number plates are lifted and stolen from the vehicles, which is much easier for the true owner to detect. Instead, new modalities have come to the forefront in the last decade that allows criminals to replicate a license plate, including 3D printing. ABC News Australia reported this month that criminals increasingly use 3D printers to make false license plates, which are then used to commit crimes ranging from robbery and fuel drive-offs to toll evasions and property offenses. Later, the unsuspecting motorists discovered that their license plates were cloned and used to commit serious crimes. This is not the first time we have heard about 3D printers being used to clone car plats. In 2018, in Melbourne, Australia, Inspector Bruce Kitchen had already described how criminals were using car sales websites, like classified ad site Gumtree, to find license plates and 3D printers to clone them. This led to many online sites urging users to blur registration numbers when selling vehicles. Then in 2020, detectives from Victoria Police‘s Frankston Crime Investigation Unit arrested two people following a six-month investigation into the alleged manufacturing and sale of cloned number plates. As stated by Detective Sergeant Nick Lamb, who led the operation, “police know that number plate theft and cloning is often at the center of more serious offending.” In Victoria, number plate theft has been an ongoing problem for years, with nearly 15,000 number plate thefts recorded in 2021. Thieves were usually known to remove plates from the cars and then transfer them to their vehicles to commit crimes, often with stolen cars. Like a physical plate swap, cloned 3D-printed plates are difficult to discern. To counteract this threat, Victoria has added an extra level of authentication, making it harder for them to be illegally copied. The new markings are similar to holograms embedded in the production of Australian banknotes. Unable to be removed using chemicals or physical force, the security markings will ensure that no reproduction of number plates is possible, said the local government. Launched in December 2022, the markings were developed with input from local police and the Department of Justice and Community Safety as a solution to combat number plate theft and cloning.
One of the side effects of the technology has been its use in delinquent activities. Aside from being utilized for cloning plates, 3D printing has been leveraged to create gun parts and entire weapons. Although 3D printed weapons haven’t played a massive role in actual criminal violence, law enforcement agencies increasingly seize 3D printed firearms every month during investigations. Furthermore, new police records indicate that this trend is going to continue, and that is why regions like the Western Australian police announced the creation of databases and programs to combat the threat of 3D printed weapons. According to data collected by 3DPrint.com, Australian police have been tracking illegal 3D printing of weapons since 2015, and now 3D printed cloned license plates pose a new threat, one that can enable other crimes. SilvesterArt https://ift.tt/bmAidoq SilvesterArt is the printmaking pseudonym of Sydney-based Sara Buchner who creates small, uncomplicated illustrations that predominantly depict scenes of heartwarming delight. Influenced by the work of Wiener Werkstätte as published in Ver Sacrum, Sara’s pieces merge clean lines with narrative, imbuing the work with an expressive and animated quality. 7 years ago, Sara was on a construction site for a renovation project she was managing. She was working as an interior architect at the time, and on this particular site visit she was talking to the flooring guys about the gym floor. It was to have Linoleum flooring. Having done Linocut in high school, Sara was curious and took some of the Linoleum flooring offcuts home with her to do some experiments. Her first print, The Flower Lady, was a postcard sized piece – simple but with enough complicated cutouts to be more complicated than it needed to be. “Let’s just say that it was a success and I loved the process,” says the printmaker. After picking and fixing up a second-hand printing press, a new roller, and a few more paper experiments later, Sara made the Chillies, Chillies, Chillies print. This was her first 2-colour piece, inspired by a friend who she was living with at the time who loved spicy food. She comments; “This print is guaranteed to make me smile every time I see it”. Sara continued printing in her free time, learning and getting bolder, and even did a 3 month artist residency in Ireland with a focus on printmaking. It’s there that she started incorporating mixed materials and collage aspects into her printmaking, using dried leaves and pressed flowers to print or as backgrounds in prints. Sara tells us that the print she is “most in love with” is her Klimt Sketch. This was the first print she made after moving back to Australia. She states; “I was ecstatic to be back in the country, I had friends and family around me, the weather was fantastic and even Covid couldn’t keep me down. I did something ambitious and decided to make a print based on a pencil sketch Gustav Klimt did while experimenting for his famous ‘the kiss’ painting. It was a lot of painstaking carving of swirls, but need I say more? I love it! Loved carving, loved printing and loved the finished print.” Recently, Sara worked on her first reduction print. She picked a stone sculpture as her subject and worked her way from pale outline to dark shadow details with 5 colours in total. “It definitely required way more brain power than the previous 2 colour prints I’d done, was it worth it? Yes… however, won’t be doing any more reduction prints unless I’ve got loads of brain power to spare,” says Sara. www.silvesterart.com Printing via People of Print https://ift.tt/JwiA4Rd February 27, 2023 at 04:54AM

Use your social mediaSocial media acts as a bridge between you and your present or potential audience. Social platforms enable Magento merchants to sell themselves in a unique and engaging way. Here are the opportunities various social media offer to online stores: TikTokTikTok offers businesses to link their Magento stores to their accounts. As a result, it allows retailers to attract new audiences and increase sales. The platform also includes eCommerce features such as analytics, product linkages, and advertising capabilities. You only need a TikTok Business account and the TikTok Ads Manager to get started. As TikTok offers the greatest trend promotion algorithms, you can make your product viral by collaborating with creators and setting trends. Facebook helps to promote goods through Facebook Shop. It is an online store that allows users to make purchases immediately on the platform or redirects them to a company’s website to finish the sale. Apart from that, Facebook offers a variety of advertising options that are perfect for an eCommerce company. For instance, the Facebook lookalike audience feature enables you to target people similar to your customers. Another valuable feature for eCommerce companies is the possibility to target people who have already interacted with you on Facebook, converting those who are aware of you but are not yet clients. Similar to TikTok, Instagram allows companies to connect their accounts to eCommerce websites, create catalogs, and add shopping tags to photos for the most effective promotion. Paid adverts with a link to the store can also be published as posts, stories, and reels. On Pinterest, it’s possible to add a link to each image you share. All images have a description that you can use to promote your images in search. Paid advertising can also assist you in growing your business. Ensure personalizationAccording to Netcore, Personalization makes 28% of customers more prone to purchasing, and 26% believe it may cause them to buy something more expensive than planned. As previously mentioned, the most recent version of Magento includes a relatively broad set of marketing personalization options centered on client segmentation based on customer data. Once the visitors’ segmentation process is finished, you can apply various criteria to each of these segments to improve their buying experience. Magento websites can collect and track data to categorize customers based on their purchasing patterns, browsing history, and other demographics. Your company can use this segmented data to create client profiles to perform more focused and personalized marketing efforts. For instance, Magento allows merchants to automate related product suggestions and control the banners and prices displayed to each client. Use email marketingAccording to Oberlo, for every dollar you spend on email marketing, you can return about $42. You may use email marketing to nurture your leads better, create more income from them, and more: Increase customer loyaltySince email marketing allows you to communicate directly with a customer, you may establish a connection and persuade them to do business with you regularly. Sending personalized birthday emails, for example, is a wonderful way to increase loyalty (typically with sales, coupons, etc.) Perform upsellingIn reaction to their actions, consumers receive a number of emails. This form of email is commonly referred to as transactional. For example, they could be triggered by requests for password resets, transactions, etc. The welcome email is an example of a powerful email marketing campaign. It is an excellent opportunity to make a favorable first impression on prospective clients. You can also utilize transactional emails to offer your clients additional upgrades, add-ons and the like. Reactivate dormant customersYou can reintroduce your brand to existing customers who last interacted with your store a while ago. Cart abandonment emails are an excellent example of reactivation. When customers add products to their cart but do not check out, they will receive an email reminding them that they wanted to make a purchase. Consider what factors influence a successful email marketing campaign for your store. Here are some metrics to take into account:
Setting up email marketing campaigns may be difficult for an online store. Fortunately, some helpful tools and email marketing extensions can guide you through the process. Influencer marketing can be viewed as a distinct approach to advertising goods and services. It is a tried-and-true method of promotion that works for both major corporations and small businesses. The most vital thing is to find the influencer whose audience matches your target one and whose values correspond to your brand’s. You’ll also need to choose the type of advertising to deploy. Influencer marketing should ultimately aim to persuade people to learn more about your brand and store. Several examples of influencer marketing campaigns are:
Push notificationsPush notifications are an easy method to bring customers back to your website. This feature is simple to integrate into Magento websites, but visitors need to consent to receive them. Notifications might show as pop-ups on your website, in the browser, or on the home screen of your customers. Voice search features are now being added to household appliances, desktops, tablets, and other electronic devices in addition to smartphones. Aside from that, some users would rely on voice search and consider it essential for a better user experience.
The simplest solution is to incorporate a “search by voice” extension into your Magento store. Such extensions can be found in the Magento marketplace or explicitly made for a store upon request. Consider using chatbotsEcommerce Chatbots are artificial intelligence technology used by internet businesses to connect with their customers. They provide opportunities for conversational marketing and resolve buyers’ worries about the product before they buy it. You can even utilize them for customer service, removing the need for human assistance. Aside from that, companies can use chatbots to market new items and sales. Chatbots employ automated pop-ups to notify customers of promotions, special offers, and other updates. Chatbots also improve communication by predicting future orders based on recent spending habits and shopping histories. Final wordsAccording to research conducted by Statista in 2022, global online retail sales have reached 4.9 trillion US dollars. And the figure is expected to rise by more than 50% during the next four years. Because of the increased competition, marketing your Magento store is more vital than ever. Magento provides multiple opportunities for promotion, so don’t hesitate to use them. 3D Printing News Briefs, February 25, 2023: Anatomic Models, Horse Trailer, & More https://ift.tt/DfBN682 Fabrisonic is introducing a new build plate with embedded sensors; this hardware news kicks off today’s 3D Printing News Briefs. Moving on, we’ll cover some of the major 3D printing applications, starting with medical, as CHU de Brest is using Stratasys technology to print patient-specific anatomic models. Moving on to military, IperionX is partnering with Carver to print titanium pump components for the US Navy, and in aerospace, Launcher’s newest space platform features many 3D printed parts. Finally, the world’s first 3D printed horse trailers are here. Fabrisonic’s New SmartPlate with Embedded SensorsFabrisonic was asked by collaborator EWI how loads could be measured going through the build plate during 3D printing, and decided to come up with an answer. Collaborating with EWI and Luna Innovations, the company used its ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) technology to print a PBF build plate with embedded optical strain gauges and thermal sensors. Called the SmartPlate, this new innovation can be made to fit custom specifications, and is able to extract data from its sensors for real-time printing, or post-processing, analysis. It’s helpful for customers dealing with parts that delaminate or debond during printing, and are curious to see how stress accumulates during a build in real time, as well as evaluate the risk of a single part that’s a portion of a larger structure, learn how to reduce waste through early failure detection, and more. The SmartPlate was tested out in EWI’s PBF system on a build with “highly problematic features,” and was able to pick up lots of extra data during the print, such as the fact that defects appeared as large compressive strains which formed early on at localized points.
CHU de Brest 3D Printing Anatomic Models with Stratasys TechThe Regional University Hospital of Brest (CHU de Brest) in France is seeing major pre-surgical planning improvements after working with Stratasys partner-reseller Cylaos to install the J5 MediJet 3D printer. Its multimaterial and multicolor capabilities are enabling more realistic, patient-specific anatomic models for planning and training purposes, and improving patient outcomes. The installation occurred with support from the hospital’s Innoveo Endowment Fund, which is designed to support projects that improve patient care, quality of life and comfort. Previously, some models were out-sourced to external providers for manufacturing, but the level of quality just wasn’t there, and the hospital also had a growing need to better manage increasing volumes, which is why the decision was made to acquire an in-house J5 MediJet. Since the installation, use of the printer has expanded to multiple departments, such as orthopedic and vascular surgery, neurosurgery and biomedical service, and interventional neuroradiology.
IperionX Partnering with Carver to 3D Print Components for US NavyThe U.S. doesn’t have the domestic capacity to manufacture the large titanium castings that are needed for high-performance centrifugal pumps, which has resulted in long lead times for new components that are sourced from a problematic foreign supply chain. But the US Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has developed additive manufacturing processes for over 500 approved parts in US submarines and ships, and the US Navy is speeding up its efforts to scale the technology. IperionX is happy to announce that it’s partnering with Carver Pump to produce 3D printed titanium pump components for the US Navy. With its lower carbon, lower cost, high-quality titanium powders made in this country from 100% recycled titanium feedstocks, IperionX is able to print these specialized pump components, which gives the US Navy the ability to increase equipment availability, lower lead times for critical parts, and sustainably reshore an important U.S. titanium metal supply chain. Carver, which has pumps installed on all current Navy ship building programs, will design the pump components and lead the qualification process, and guide IperionX on the prototyping.
Launcher’s Orbiter Platform Features 3D Printed PartsCalifornia-based small launch vehicle manufacturer Launcher, which was just acquired by Vast, is revealing more of the 3D printed parts that make up Orbiter, its orbit transfer vehicle (OTV) platform program. With a payload capacity of up to 400 kg, the OTV debuted last month on SpaceX’s Transporter-6 rideshare mission. Orbiter integrates with every Cube and small satellite separation system, and has a propulsive capability of 500 m/s delta-V, which, according to Launcher’s website, will increase the “capability of major rideshare missions,” and ensure more accurate placement of spacecraft in their exact orbit. Orbiter is the top end of the Launcher Light rocket’s three-stage design, and all of the parts in the above graphic were 3D printed using Velo3D’s fully integrated metal AM solution. We already knew that the engine’s shrouded impeller was 3D printed, and the graphic shows several other 3D printed important components, such as the engine chambers and injectors, both printed out of Inconel 718. The OTV’s thruster bracket and manifold, along with the star camera baffle for precise navigation, were printed using Aluminum F357. Finally, the platform’s thrust structure, spring housings, and multi-purpose tanks were printed in a titanium alloy. World’s First 3D Printed Horse TrailerFinally, Double D Horse Trailers is partnering with Loci Robotics Inc. and One One Lab to create the world’s first 3D printed horse trailers. The automotive design studio created the modernized, functional design, while LOCI is working to make the trailer “a safe and efficiently printable product” with its LOCI-Two+ system robotic arm system. There are several reasons Double D Horse Trailers and its partners wanted to go with 3D printing rather than traditional manufacturing to mass manufacture the trailers, including the reduction of supply chain limitations and ability to use recycled materials—the 3D printed trailers will be made mostly of polycarbonate, with, as One One Lab says, carbon fiber reinforcement. This leads to another reason: PC has been shown in studies to have high temperature resistance, which makes the material more durable. This is an important feature when you’re transporting big, strong animals like horses!

The resin has 50% ceramic filler and is meant for a fast chair side workflow. The company claims to be able to go from design to delivery in 45 minutes. Czeck companies ČEZ and Škoda JS say that they have made 4159 plastic and metal parts for nuclear power plants and power plants. Since their plants must last 60 years MRO is a challenge for these companies and they are turning more towards 3D printing. An EPFL team lead by Matteo Hirsch has made 3D printed living structural biocomposites. A 3D printed porous CaCO3-based composite was made with the compressive strength near trabecular bone. In the future this nature inspired solution that uses natural materials including bacteria could be used for coral reefs and perhaps bone.
