This 1921 Cartoon About Photos is One of the First Memes https://ift.tt/2kCisiM
In 1921, the satirical magazine The Judge published this two-panel comic about how you look in photos. It’s strikingly similar to the “Expectation vs. Reality” memes that circulate the Web today, and the comic is one of the earliest recorded memes. In the comic, we see comparison portraits of “How you think you look when a flashlight is taken” compared to “How you really look.” We don’t use the word “flashlight” in this way nowadays, but in those days it was apparently a reference to shooting a still photo portrait using an old school flash lamp, which used explosions to produce bright artificial illumination. After Yesterday’s Print first stumbled upon the comic, BBC News did some digging and found one earlier example of an “Expectations vs. Reality” meme comic published a year or two earlier. So this comic may not be the first-ever meme, but it’s interesting to see that people have hated the way they were captured in photos a century ago. A 1921 meme is still just as relatable today. Photography News via PetaPixel https://petapixel.com May 30, 2018 at 11:47AM Man Climbs NASCAR Fence for Closeup Photos of Racecars https://ift.tt/2LLGpkm During the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway this past weekend, one fan apparently decided that his camera wasn’t close enough to the action, so he decided to climb the 30-foot-tall+ catch fence for ultra-close up photos of racecars speeding by below him at an average speed of 140mph (~225km/h). Fellow spectator Vance Hicks Jr. was in attendance and captured the 1-minute video above showing the incident. Security was understandably not pleased with the fan’s antics. One security guard quickly approached, climbed up partially himself, and yanked the fan down by the seat of his pants. The fan was immediately ejected from the track and told not to return, Yahoo Sports reports, which also notes that he seems he avoided legal issues, as there are no records of an arrest over the incident by the city’s police department. In it, photographer Sean Tucker shares his system of effectively photographing a large number of people in a short amount of time.
“This isn’t usually glamorous work,” Tucker writes. “You often only have a couple of minutes with each person and so speed and consistency are the name of the game.”
Tucker has streamlined his system so that he can generally bring a subject in and out in between 90 seconds to two minutes. In the video, he covers strategies and tips for things like setting up the lighting, posing your subject, and choosing/organizing the resulting files. Looks Like Nikon Is Going After Sony’s A7 III With Its New Mirrorless System https://ift.tt/2xno2im Nikon’s rumored full-frame mirrorless professional camera system is benchmarking Sony’s A7 III and its competitive $USD 2000 price tag according to rumors that slate the debut for such a monumental piece of gear for this year’s Photokina in Germany, September 2018. No doubt Nikon’s premiering of such a product is much-anticipated by Nikon fans but analysts are beginning to wonder if the company can really bring the heat against Sony in a segment that it has done quite well in for some time.

Nikon Rumors has indicated that the camera will use a new “Z” mount with a 24MP full-frame sensor and it should debut alongside two lenses with new lenses coming 6 months after the camera’s release. There is even talk of an adaptor to allow current Nikon users to use F-mount equipment on the new Nikon camera in what the Phoblographer bills as a way to make any transition to the system easier for longtime fans. What has analysts speculating is to what extent the new Nikon camera will be on par with its rumored benchmark, the Sony A7 III. Sony has had quite some time to perfect its camera system and it is in the small details that Sony may have an initial edge over the new gear from Nikon. As the Phoblographer points out, Sony has really honed its battery life for the A7 III and the camera features facial tracking, among other features, that Nikon lacks. Where the camera will really rise or fall is potentially in how useful the F-mount adapter they are making for it is. If it really allows for parity between systems then the new camera from Nikon is really not a difficult decision for current Nikon users and may eventually sway Sony stalwarts over to the new system. If any of the rumors are correct, this year’s Photokina is going to be amazing in terms of product introduced. Canon is Now Out of the Film Camera Business After 80 Years https://ift.tt/2shsVEy
Canon just officially discontinued the EOS-1V, the company’s last remaining film camera. The move brings an official end to Canon’s film camera business after an 80-year run. Canon entered the camera industry back in 1937 as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, creating a Leica clone called “The Kwanon” that was Japan’s first 35mm focal-plane-shutter camera. The company wasn’t yet in the business of lenses, so it used Nikkor lenses from Nippon Kogaku K.K., the company that could go on to become Nikon. Over the next 80 years, Canon would produce a long, respected line of rangefinders and SLR cameras that turned the company into a global leader in camera equipment. But after the introduction of Canon’s first digital camera, the RC-701 in 1984, Canon’s focus began shifting more and more toward the emerging digital camera market. Even as virtually all of its film cameras were discontinued in the digital age, Canon kept the EOS-1V alive for professional film photographers as its sole film camera.
The EOS-1V, a professional 35mm SLR, was launched in 2000, and its design paved the way for the modern generations of Canon EOS DSLRs. The ‘V’ in the name (which also stands for “Vision”) referenced the fact that the camera was Canon’s 5th generation of professional SLRs. Production of the EOS-1V had actually ended in 2010, Sankei reports, but Canon had continued to ship and sell the camera from its inventory.
Although Canon is ending sales of the 1V, it’s extending repairs for the camera through October 31st, 2025 — after October 31st, 2020, however, repairs may be refused if the necessary parts have been exhausted from inventory. Shooting landscapes is one of the most popular genres of photography. Photographs of landscapes typically capture the presence of nature and can inspire you. Outside towns and cities, you are surrounded by beautiful scenery. However, taking a good photo of those epic views is not as easy as you think. Are you making these landscape photography mistakes? Here are some tips to help you uncover why your landscape photos are not working for you and how you can turn unsatisfying pictures into your best ever images.
1. Including too much detail in the frameHave you ever been on an amazing trip, gazed at a glorious landscape and captured the incredible scenery on camera only to find out your picture doesn’t stand out? There are several reasons why this is happening. Including too much in the frame is one of the reasons why your photograph is not appealing to you. Perhaps the trees you have included are overwhelming the scene and making the view too broad. If so, eliminate these objects from the frame. Crop inwards slightly and simplify the field of view.
2. Wonky horizonsOne common mistake some photographers regularly make is to capture a scene with uneven horizon levels. You can become so engrossed in enjoying a breathtaking view that you can overlook this aspect. Make sure you pay attention to ensuring the horizon line is straight when photographing your next landscape image. Don’t leave it until you get home to find out that your pictures are unbalanced or crooked.
3. Taking the picture without thinkingAnother mistake people make when photographing landscapes is to start snapping away without giving any thought as to what they are capturing. It is easy to get carried away with an incredible view in front of you. But if you take the time to consider why your photographs are not working for you, your results will improve.
Take a view of the location with just your eyes, think what you would like to capture, and then take your photo. This approach of “seeing the scene” first can help you to take better pictures rather than just picking up your camera and taking a shot without thinking about what you are photographing.
4. Shooting flat, uninteresting scenesImagine your dream landscape scene is right in front of you. You’re standing at the top of a magical mountain, alongside a beautiful flowing river, or above some rolling hills in the countryside, for example, and you start photographing the beautiful view. When you check your images you discover they look dull and uninteresting. So you ask yourself why they are not standing out? A major factor that can make or break an image of that stunning panorama is light. Without directional sunlight in your shots, the images can look flat and lifeless with few textures and tones. Below is an image where the sun catching the hills adds warmth to the image to make it more interesting.
On your next landscape photography trip, I recommend paying attention to the light and trying to take pictures of more illuminated scenes. I suggest taking a photograph in no light and comparing it with one captured in some light. Look at the differences and see how the images vary. Ask yourself how do they contrast? Is one better than the other? What makes it stand out? 5. Including distracting elementsOnce you have found a visually compelling location and have some nice light, give some thought to the composition. Consider what subject matter looks interesting and only include that. You will not be making the most of a scene if you include unsightly aspects of the surroundings such as telegraph poles or overhead electricity cables. If you have no choice but to capture these elements in your composition, you can always remove them in post-processing. Below is an example where I have eliminated distracting elements after taking the picture, in the post-production phase.

After editing. Editing the photo to remove the unsightly wires enhances the image and helps to focus attention on the church, trees, and the mist. Whether you are on a safari or in a national park or trying to capture wildlife in your backyard, it requires a LOT of patience. With wild animals, you cannot expect them to cooperate with you or stay steady/pose for you, but you need to wait, wait and wait for moments/actions to happen in order to get good wildlife photographs. If you want great wildlife images, you will need to wait for days or weeks or even months, but why? That is because you need to get to know the animals, in order to get the time, place and other things right to photograph them.

Required Gear:Have a camera that allows for manual settings and telephoto lenses are a must for wildlife photography as you cannot / should not get close to the animals in the wild. The zoom depends on the size of the animal you are shooting and how close you want the shot. If you’re looking to photograph birds, you will need at least a 400mm or 600 mm lens. Most importantly, know your gear! Note: These lenses can be quite heavy to carry around and are not a problem if you’re shooting from a vehicle, but if you have to carry your gear around for long periods, it is good to have a teleconverter on a 300mm lens, but they can affect the image quality and reduce the amount of light entering the lens.

Make sure you get up well before sunrise to reach the location on time. If you miss this, try as much to avoid the harsh midday light and do not forget that you can capture some amazing silhouettes during and after the golden hour. 3. Know Your Subject:You cannot always get to a location and return with great shots. Wildlife photographers need a good understanding of their subjects, their habitat, behaviour and personalities so that they get some great shots. There are photographers who visit a place for days or months in order to make themselves and the animal comfortable enough to capture their photographs.

Time Your Shots And Show Your Subject’s Personality:With wildlife, if you know them and their behaviour, you can expect to capture certain actions sometimes by closely keeping an eye on them (predicting behaviours beforehand); that is if you have learned them well. In times like these, capture your subject’s personality. There are times when actions can happen unexpectedly – so be ready for the shot always. 5. Don’t Forget To Capture Textures, Patterns, Lines:There are animals and birds with beautiful patterns and textures on their skin. Why not deviate from the usual norms and photograph these to create some abstract images? Sometimes a very huge pack of animals, when shot to fill the frame, can create an interesting photograph too.

Don’t Hesitate To Go Wide:You do not want to always shoot a portrait or close details of the animals, instead go wide and show their environment or habitat as this gives the viewer an idea of where and how the animals live. Do not forget to look around while waiting for animals because you will be surprised at what you can discover and photograph.

Don’t Hesitate To Get Closer:Where you want to show the personality of an animal or a group, get closer (zoom in) and get even closer to capture the little details that you can (think of abstract compositions!). 8. Get Down To Their Level, Capture Eye Contacts:It is always good to get down to your subject’s level to capture some compelling images and take the viewer into the scene. Having eye contact in images will make for a great photograph.

You need to patiently and persistently practice, wait and keep trying till you get it right. 10. Respect Wildlife, Enjoy The Experience:Remember, you are in their habitat and not yours – so respect wildlife. Do not disturb them, tease them or use flash while photographing. Above all, do not just keep looking into the technical details always, instead of when you need a shot, just get it before it slips away! And….look around and enjoy looking at how these animals live.
