Walmart Could Soon Employ Drones As Shopping Assistants

Walmart‘s newest set of patent files outlines a major technology implementation in how the store tracks inventory and addresses costumer experience. One of the patents is for a smart shopping cart connected to a smartphone that could let shoppers know where to find their desired items. Another is for a drone assistant, which can be requested through a mobile device to help users with pricing questions and getting around the store. 

The other two patents focus on bettering transportation and stock logistics with autonomous technology. According to The Verge, companies like Walmart often submit patents that never see the light of day, but smart carts are already up and running in New Zealand and drone assistants are definitely an intriguing inclusion to physical shopping. All of these measures are in part a response to the rise of e-commerce, which has seen physical stores trying to compete by enhancing the shopping experience.
