Louis Vuitton's pricey smartwatch gets a big upgrade for 2019 https://engt.co/2AngPxY Louis Vuitton has upgraded its extravagant take on Wear OS with Qualcomm's new chipset for wearables. The new LV Tambour Horizon smartwatch is now powered by the Snapdragon Wear 3100, the same chip that Qualcomm worked on for years with help from Google. Since one of the new chip's features is better battery life, the upgraded Tambour can now last one full day and up to five additional days if you're just using it to display time. The designer has also equipped the device with an improved screen that boasts better definition than the previous version. Further, the model comes with a new 24-hour ring that has a day/night indicator across the rim, which will be visible even in ambient mode. If you'll recall, rich ambient mode is one of the Wear 3100's new features -- it displays time and information like heart rate or step count on the screen while using less power than the watch would if it's fully active. In addition to upgrading its old Tambour Horizon designs and colors with the new chipset, LV has also added a white ceramic option. Unfortunately, the luxury company hasn't revealed its availability or pricing yet, but we doubt anybody expects it to be cheap. The old version will you back at least $2,490, and this model will likely be just as eye-wateringly expensive. Gadget News via Engadget http://www.engadget.com December 29, 2018 at 06:45PM

China's first video game approvals in months don't include Tencent https://engt.co/2QdFI4p A week after China approved its first batch of video games in nine months, the list is finally available... and who's not included may be more notable than who is. The country's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has announced that 80 online games made the cut, but industry giant Tencent wasn't part of that initial mix. It's not certain why regulators didn't greenlight Tencent games, although China recently instituted an ethics committee that would ensure games don't promote addiction, short-sightedness and some forms of sex and violence. It's a significant blow to Tencent. Although it has massively popular games like Arena of Valor (Honor of Kings in its home country) and involvement in both Fortnite and PUBG, it's still heavily dependent on releasing new games in its native China. Tencent's shares fell by more than 20 percent in 2018 due to the approvals freeze, and they're unlikely to recover now that an approval still isn't in the cards. Unless Tencent's games are simply taking longer to approve, the company might have to significantly rethink its approach if it wants to keep releasing new titles. Clean Your Holiday Decorations Before You Pack Them Up http://bit.ly/2GNMwGc Before you pack up all those holiday decorations do future-you a favor: clean them. If you hung wreaths or garland up in your home this year I can pretty much guarantee you that they’re covered in dust right now. Mine have a mix of dust and pet hair because my dog is an expert at spreading himself all over anything and everything. Cleaning your decorations now can save you the hassle of having to clean them next year and will make setting up your house next year a lot more pleasant. Advertisement Obviously, your methods will vary depending on the type of item you’re cleaning. Most plastic decorations can be rinsed off with water and left out to dry before you pack them. Others can be gently wiped down with a moist paper towel, dusted, or even hit with your handheld vacuum to get clean. Here’s a rundown on how to appropriately clean a number of different types of ornaments. The idea here is that when you take things out next year they’ll be fresh and clean, not caked with year-old dust and grime. I also HIGHLY recommend picking up a few plastic storage containers to keep everything in. If you haven’t already moved to plastic storage, the containers can be amazing for keeping things safe and dry during the offseason. Advertisement We had squirrels get into our attic a few years ago and go to town on a number of ornaments and decorations that I wish they hadn’t. When I was a child we did a ton of “cookie” decorations that were then sprayed with some sort of shell so they would last forever. Turns out squirrels thought they were still delicious after 20 years. They also ate through the cardboard boxes we had them in, so taking the boxes down the next year was… an adventure. Don’t be me and spent $10 on a decent plastic container you can use forever. Besides being a bit better at rodent protection, the plastic can also keep your stuff safe from the elements and will give you a fighting chance if you end up with a leaking roof/pipe in that attic down the line. Samsung is reportedly making a budget Bixby-powered smart speaker http://bit.ly/2Ag1xuT Samsung promised a Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker back in August, a premium device that could potentially compete against Apple’s HomePod and the Amazon Echo Plus. While that speaker still isn’t available and doesn’t have a set release date, the company is reportedly also planning a second Bixby speaker that comes in black and according to Sam Mobile, citing an anonymous source, may be a more affordable option that can compete with the likes of cheaper smart speakers. The second Bixby speaker reportedly has the model number SM-V310, while the Galaxy Home is model number SM-V510, suggesting that there could always be more Bixby smart speakers down the line. There aren’t any known specs for the lower-end speaker yet, but it’s presumed to have fewer of the features Samsung announced for the main Galaxy Home, such as six built-in speakers, a subwoofer, and eight microphones. Being a budget option could also help set apart a Bixby smart speaker in an already crowded market where more established companies like Google and Amazon offer devices powered by smart assistants that people already know to be reliable. Samsung has said very little since August about the Galaxy Home and hasn’t confirmed its rumored counterpart, but with CES 2019 just around the corner, where Samsung is sure to have a presence, it could be possible that more information will be released shortly. Bangladesh shuts off mobile internet ahead of election https://engt.co/2CFLUP4 The Bangladeshi government isn't just counting on Facebook and Twitter crackdowns to protect its December 30th parliamentary election. The country's Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has shut down 3G and 4G mobile data to "prevent rumors and propaganda" from skewing the vote. The measure took effect immediately and was poised to last through the end of election day. Whether or not that's the main reason isn't clear -- the government doesn't exactly have a clean track record. Bangladesh temporarily shut off mobile internet access in August in an ostensible bid to curb violence at protests over road safety, but there's evidence suggesting that it wanted to stop the dissemination of media showing pro-government activists and police attacking protesters. In 2015, it also clamped down on individual messaging apps in an attempt to thwart protests. This latest move might help prevent violence and misinformation, but it could also hinder the opposition's ability to rally support. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's administration has been accused of intimidating and imprisoning critics to help maintain power, and this could be another extension of that strategy. How to Watch Every Ending of 'Black Mirror - Bandersnatch' http://bit.ly/2AnsyN4 This morning Netflix launched Bandersnatch, a stand-alone episode of the popular ‘Black Mirror’ series. Unlike other shows, the episode works sort of like those Choose Your Own Adventure books, where periodically you need to select what you’d like to happen next in order to continue. It’s also best watched on a computer screen for easy selection (I put it up on our larger monitor). The episode is not compatible with Apple TV or Google’s Chromecast. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon, and like those Choose Your Own Adventure books, there are a number of ways that the story can end for you and it can be hard to figure out where each option will take you. Luckily, one Imgur poster has taken the time (since midnight!) to create a flow chart laying most of those options out. I recommend giving it a watch once just choosing what you’d like along the way before checking out the chart. Here’s the (obviously spolier-filled) chart: With so many ways this thing can end, I can see watching Bandersnatch at least a few more times to see a few different endings.
