These $20 DIY kits make classic controllers wireless

https://ift.tt/2utea2D

8bitdo is known for making some of the best wireless retro game controllers around, and now, the company wants you to start making your own. Today, it’s launching a new line of DIY mod kits so you can turn existing classic controllers into wireless ones. Each kit costs $19.99, and there are three kits available: one for the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive), as well as kits for the NES and SNES. (The kits will also work with the wired controllers that come with the NES and SNES Classics.)

The kits all seem fairly simple, require no soldering, and include all of the necessary tools. Once you manage to set everything up, your old controller will support Bluetooth and work wirelessly with the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Mac, and Raspberry Pi. The kit also adds a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. If you’re interested, you can grab the kits now from the 8bitdo store.

Best Smart Wi-Fi Air Purifiers in 2018

https://ift.tt/2uFpA2B

Clean up the air in your home with one of these fantastic air purifiers!

It seems no matter where you run this time of year, allergens, and other particulates are floating in the air all around you. The grass, flowers, dust, and pollen that the warmer seasons bring, combined with pet dander can cause the air in your home to get pretty dirty. It sucks continuously having to pop allergy meds just to feel normal even when you're sitting in your own home.

Whether you have allergies or not, If you want the air in your home to be cleaner, here are my favorite smart air purifiers to help you out.

  • GermGuardian Smart 4-in-1 Air Purifier
  • Blueair Classic 605
  • Winix NK105

GermGuardian Smart 4-in-1 Air Purifier

If you're looking for a smart-enabled air purifier that won't break the bank, the $160 GermGuardian Smart 4-in-1 Air Purifier will serve you well.

Equipped with powerful fans at the back of the device, the GermGuardian not only cleans the air around you but keeps it circulating, so the clean air moves around the room.

The GermGuardian passes air through three different filters to clean the air around you of 99.97% of allergens, including dust, pet dander, pollen, and more. Plus, the smart air quality monitor will detect the number of particles in the air and adjust how fast the GermGuardian performs automatically.

Both Alexa and Google Assistant can work with the GermGuardian, but it also comes with a handy app you can use to control the device over Wi-Fi or a data network on both iOS and Android.

Blueair Classic 605

If you need an air purifier that can clean the air in a slightly bigger space, and don't mind paying a premium, the Blueair Classic 605 costs about $750 but can clean the air in the space of up to 775 square feet.

With three fan speeds, the Blueair Classic 605 can get to work removing 99.97% of the allergens in the air fast. It also sports a quiet mode that allows the Blueair classic to function at a whisper, perfect if you want one in your home office or where you sleep.

Compatible with Alexa and armed with the iOS or Android app, you can control the Blueair Classic 505 any way you want. You'll need to replace the filter about once a year, and the filters cost about $70. Plus, if you want a cheaper and smaller unit form Blueair, you could also check out the Classic 205 and Classic 405.

See at Amazon

Winix NK105

For about $230, the Winix NK105 is a compact air purifier that can clean the air in a space up to 320 square feet.

While it doesn't have Alexa of Google Assistant support, it does have an app for both iOS and Android that allows you to completely control the air purifier over wi-fi or data connection.

Its four-stage cleaning process eliminates 99.97% of airborne allergens such as pet dander, pollen, dust, pet hair, and dirt. Plus, the CD carbon filter helps to get rid of odors and smoke, meaning the next time you make a pan-fried salmon your whole house won't smell like fish for days.

Make your classic gamepads wireless with 8BitDo's DIY kits

Make your classic gamepads wireless with 8BitDo's DIY kits

https://ift.tt/2uFoBzr

8BitDo

8BitDo will happily sell you wireless controllers that are vaguely similar to classic gamepads of yore, but it clearly can't sell you the real deal without invoking massive copyright battles. It can, however, offer you the next best thing. The company is now selling mod kits that add Bluetooth wireless to original NES, SNES, Super Famicom and Mega Drive controllers. You don't need a soldering iron or a toolbox -- so long as you're comfortable opening a vintage gamepad in the first place, you'll have everything you need (including a lithium-ion battery) to avoid stringing cords across the room.

Each kit costs $20 and should enable support for virtually any device that can use a Bluetooth gamepad, including the Nintendo Switch, Macs, Windows PCs and Raspberry Pi-based projects. While you may wince at the thought of taking apart a hard-to-replace controller for the sake of convenience, it might be justifiable if it gets you the trip-free game input you wish you had as a kid.

Republican Mike Coffman joins push to restore net neutrality

By Roger Fingas
Tuesday, July 17, 2018, 07:54 am PT (10:54 am ET)

Colorado Representative Mike Coffman on Tuesday become the first Republican to demonstrate support for U.S. House efforts to force a vote on net neutrality protections, undone earlier this year by a 3-2 vote at the Federal Communications Commission.

Coffman has also introduced a bill that would amend the Communications Act of 1934 to require net neutrality. So far, the petition to force a vote has only had the support of 176 Democrats, Reuters noted — a problem given that the House has 435 members in all. A majority must sign for the vote to take place.

The Coffman bill would ban measures like throttling, blocking, and paid prioritization by internet service providers, but if passed would also block the FCC from setting service rates. At present, it is not clear if the bill as it stands will even make it to a vote.

During the Obama administration, a 2015 order placed ISPs under Title II regulations treating them as utilities, enshrining net neutrality. In December however the FCC under Ajit Pai voted to overturn net neutrality, which officially expired on June 11.

An undercurrent of resistance has existed within the U.S. government. On May 16 the Senate voted 52 to 47 to reverse the FCC's decision, and a collection of 22 states has sued the FCC. The cause is also believed to have broad public support, but opposition from major ISPs like Verizon.

AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon have vowed not to engage in unfair discrimination, but the companies are no longer legally bound to do so.

Apple has been a vocal backer of net neutrality. Throttling, blocking, or prioritization could potentially interfere with services like Apple Music and iTunes, and the company depends on smooth internet in general to make its hardware appealing.

Google expands job search features in the UK

https://ift.tt/2Jsw7mB

Google is expanding its job search feature to the UK, the company announced last night in a blog post. Now, job hunters will be able to search for employment through the Google Jobs function and have access to info like salary, reviews, and commute time to the office.

In the blog post, Google highlights two existing features that will help job seekers: a job search save function and email alerts for jobs that were posted while you’re not actively browsing its site. Still, Glassdoor, which operates in the UK, has most of these features already, including a salary estimator and single tap saves.

The one point that Google can leverage is its inclusion of Google Maps to help you calculate the commute time from your home to a potential new job, which could be an additional consideration for job hunters who ordinarily don’t prioritize that in the initial search. You can type “jobs near me” to bring up relevant positions with salary and review info attached.

Google Jobs was launched last year in the US, and it has arrived in several other countries like India and Canada since then. Google says it will eventually expand into more destinations.

Best MacBook Pro & Air Prime Day Deals: Accessories Docks Cases

Best MacBook Pro & Air Prime Day Deals: Accessories, Docks, Cases

https://ift.tt/2IruR2y

MacBook. MacBook Air. MacBook Pro. Oh my!

UPDATE: Prime Day Deals on MacBooks

Prime members can save up to $600 off MacBook models over at Amazon right now. A whole range of Apple MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air laptops are on sale for a limited time while supplies last.

Highlights include:

  • MacBook Pro 13.3" (Late 2016), i7, 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM $1,599.99 (was $2,199.99)
  • MacBook Pro 13.3" Laptop (Late 2016) i5, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM $1,499.99 (was $1,799.99)
  • Macbook 12" (Early 2016), M5, 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM $1,099.99 (was $1,399.99)
  • Macbook Pro with Touch Bar 15" (Late 2016), i7, 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM $1,659.99 (was $2,199.99)

There are a number of other models with significant savings, so be sure to check out the full range to find the exact spec to suit your needs.

Remember, these deals are exclusive to Amazon Prime members. If you're not already a member, there's no better time than Prime Day to make the most of your 30-day free trial.

See on Amazon

See all the best Prime Day deals

Are you in the market for a new MacBook and wondering if you should hold out until Amazon's Prime Day in the summer? Think you're going to find some unique deals during that time that you can't find right now? There's no doubt that Amazon's Prime Day is a huge day for deals, especially on electronics. If you're already a Prime member or don't mind signing up for it to get those deals, it's definitely worth it for a lot of reasons. We don't know exactly what's going to be on sale during this year's Prime Day, but we can look at past Prime Days and take a guess.

Before we do all that though, you need to know what you're looking for in a laptop if you decide to buy one. Laptops come in all shapes and sizes. Are you looking for the most affordable and portable option, or the most powerful workhorse machine that you can find in a small package? These things are important to know before you see a discount and buy the wrong thing.

Something like the MacBook Air is great for basic web browsing, document creation, video calls, and other basic activities, while fully-loaded MacBook Pro models can be used for photo and video editing, some gaming, and more. The 12-inch MacBook is a decent compromise between the two other models, and the price generally falls in between as well.

My advice to you is, if you're in the market for a laptop you should establish these parameters before you even begin looking for sales. Know ahead of time what you want particularly because Prime Day sales come and go really fast. After that, the next trick will be to know where to look for laptop deals.

Prime Day is Amazon's day. It's in the name, of course. The problem with Amazon in regards to MacBook deals is that Amazon doesn't have a lot of investment in laptops as a device. We're bound to see a ton of deals on smart home devices because Amazon has smart home devices like the Echo Dot or Echo Plus. We'll see tablet sales of all shapes and sizes because Amazon has the Kindle Fire HD. We even see TV deals because Amazon has the Fire TV and Fire OS. There is no dedicated Amazon Fire laptop, though, so Amazon cares a lot less about pushing those products.

Luckily, that doesn't stop other retailers from barking up that particular tree, though. Best Buy, Walmart, and many others will have sales trying to compete with Amazon's sales. Best Buy is already one of the best places to regularly find MacBook deals, so I imagine that will still be true in July. Hopefully, these retailers can pick up the slack for other laptops, too. Amazon generally runs sales on previous-generation hardware, so if you're looking for the latest and greatest you'll definitely be disappointed.

In prior Prime Day sales, we didn't see much in terms of action on MacBook deals. You may see some small discounts or random configurations go on sale, but odds are we won't be seeing a whole bunch of them hit for amazing prices all at the same time. If you're patient and keep an eye out, you may be able to score a discount, but don't get too excited about the prospect of saving big on your next purchase on Prime Day.

EU agrees to data deal with Japan as US pact hangs in the balance

https://ift.tt/2Lqex4z

Sylvain Sonnet

The EU and Japan have reached an agreement that will allow businesses in both regions to freely share and transfer data without additional safeguards or authorizations. The deal, which covers information such as credit card details and browsing habits, will help to fortify links between the EU and Japan, which recently signed the world's largest free-trade agreement.

Strict EU data laws prevent companies from storing Europeans' personal information on foreign servers unless the countries can guarantee a high level of privacy. Only 12 currently meet the standard, but parties involved in the new deal hope to set a precedent for future agreements. EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said that "by working together, we can shape the global standards for data protection and show common leadership in this important area."

The EU had a similar deal with the US, named "Safe Harbor," which underpinned billions of dollars of transatlantic trade, but this was struck down in 2015 by EU officials who felt the pact didn't provide enough protection against US snooping. A new agreement, "Privacy Shield," was hurriedly drawn up, but that's now also under the spotlight.

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) wants to suspend Privacy Shield because it believes it lacks the necessary guarantees and safeguards. A group from the CCBE are currently in talks with US representatives on the matter in Washington, but if a suspension goes ahead the business world could be thrown into legal limbo. And of course, another collapsed data deal won't do much to improve already tense relations between the two regions.
