We now know the tipping point that prompted the FBI to open its Trump-Russia investigation

  • The FBI decided to investigate whether President Trump's campaign colluded with Russia after early foreign-policy adviser George Papadopoulos told a top Australian diplomat that Russia had compromising information on Hillary Clinton, The New York Times reported.
  • Though there were several events that prompted the bureau to investigate the campaign, Papadopoulos' conversation with the diplomat was reportedly the one that led the bureau to formally launch its probe.
  • Newly obtained emails also show that Papadopoulos' reach and influence within the campaign was greater than previously known.

The FBI's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow was not prompted by a dossier compiled by a former British spy, but by campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos boasting to a top Australian diplomat about Russia's dirt on then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, The New York Times reported Saturday.

The Times also obtained new emails which show Papadopoulos' influence within the campaign and contacts with Russia-linked individuals was greater than previously known.

The bureau opened its Russia probe in July 2016. President Donald Trump and his allies have dismissed the investigation as a Democratic "witch hunt" spurred by the dossier, which was compiled by former MI6 officer Christopher Steele, and alleges a number of explosive Trump-Russia ties.

The dossier was originally funded by a group of Republicans opposed to Trump during the Republican primaries. After Trump became the party's nominee, Democrats took over its funding. Though the document has not been fully verified, some of it has been corroborated and the FBI and the Senate Intelligence Committee are using it as a "roadmap" in their investigations.

But The Times report indicates that Papadopoulos, not the dossier, played a pivotal role in driving the FBI to investigate the campaign's ties to Russia.

Papadopoulos is one of four individuals in Trump's orbit who have so far been charged since special counsel Robert Mueller began overseeing the Russia probe in May, after Trump fired FBI director James Comey. Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to one count of making false statements to investigators about his contacts with Russians during a January 27 interview with the FBI.

Papadopoulos told the FBI at the time that his outreach to the Russia-linked foreign nationals occurred before he joined the campaign, according to the statement of offense. But his first interaction with an "overseas professor" with ties to high-level Russian officials occurred on March 14, 2016, weeks after he joined the campaign, the document said.

That professor, who was later revealed to be Maltese academic Joseph Mifsud, wasn't open to engaging with Papadopoulos at first, but he became more interested after he learned Papadopoulos was working on the Trump campaign.

Mifsud and Papadopoulos stayed in touch and Mifsud connected the Trump campaign adviser with at least two Russia-linked individuals over the next few weeks: Olga Polonskaya, a wine company manager based in St. Petersburg, and Ivan Timofeev, a senior official in the Russian International Affairs Council.

Mifsud told Papadopoulos in April 2016, just over a month after their initial contact, that the Russians had information that would embarrass Hillary Clinton that came in the form of "thousands of emails," the FBI document said.

The next day, Papadopoulos wrote in an email to campaign adviser Stephen Miller — who now serves as a senior policy adviser in the White House — that there were "interesting messages coming in from Moscow" but did not elaborate on what he had learned.

In May, Papadopoulos told Alexander Downer, Australia's top diplomat to the UK, about Russia's dirt on Clinton while they were drinking at a swanky bar in London, according to The Times.

Two months later, when the radical pro-transparency group WikiLeaks posted a trove of hacked Democratic National Committee emails online, Australian officials informed their American counterparts of Papadopoulos' conversation with Downer, the Times reported.

Papadopoulos' role appears larger than previously known

Though the White House has worked to distance itself and the Trump campaign from Papadopoulos since the charge against him was unsealed, details in the FBI document and previously undisclosed emails obtained by The Times paint a different picture of Papadopoulos' role and influence within the operation.

According to the statement of offense, when the campaign's newly formed foreign policy team met for the first time in March 2016, Papadopoulos said he was connected to people who could organize a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was serving as Alabama senator at the time, was at the meeting.

Sessions said initially that he did not disclose the conversation to Congress because he "did not recall." Later, he amended his previous statement and said that he shot down Papadopoulos' suggestion because of the aide's inexperience and lack of foreign policy credentials.

Papadopoulos' actions over the next few months during the 2016 campaign indicate that he was either unaware of Sessions' warning or did not heed it.

Mifsud introduced Papadopoulos to Timofeev, the Russian national with connections to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via email on April 18, according to the FBI's October filing. They had multiple conversations over the next few weeks to lay the groundwork for a meeting between the Trump campaign and Russian government officials.

Papadopoulos emailed then-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski in April saying he had received "a lot of calls over the past month" about how "Putin wants to host the Trump team when the time is right," according to The Washington Post. He emailed Lewandowski and another campaign adviser, Sam Clovis, on May 4 to ask again about setting up a meeting.

"There are legal issues we need to mitigate, meeting with foreign officials as a private citizen," Clovis replied.

'The signal to meet'

donald trump 4/27/2016Associated Press/Evan VucciPapadopoulos was also influential enough in the campaign to be tapped to edit an outline of Trump's first foreign policy speech, which he gave on April 27, 2016.

"We desire to live peacefully and in friendship with Russia and China," Trump said at the time. He added that he wanted to ease tensions and see "improved relations with Russia," and that "this horrible cycle of hostility must end and ideally will end soon. Good for both countries."

He also said that he wanted to "make a deal" that was not only beneficial to the US, but to Russia as well.

After the speech, Papadopoulos touched base with Timofeev and said the speech was "the signal to meet," according to The Times.

Mifsud also agreed and said the address was "a statesman speech," and Polonskaya wrote in an email obtained by The Times that she was glad Trump's "position toward Russia is much softer than that of other candidates."

On July 14, 2016, Papadopoulos emailed one of his foreign contacts and indicated a meeting had "been approved from our side."

The meeting, Papadopoulos wrote, would be "for August or September in the UK (London) with me and my national chairman, and maybe one other foreign policy adviser and you, members of president putin's office and the mfa to hold a day of consultations and to meet one another."

Mifsud also reportedly told Papadopoulos he wanted to act as a campaign surrogate for Trump. According to The Times, Mifsud suggested in an email to Papadopoulos that he could pen op-eds as a "neutral" observer and attend Trump's rallies with press credentials while also being briefed on the campaign's inner workings.

Papadopoulos was arrested in July and his guilty plea suggests he is cooperating with investigators. Three other former campaign or administration officials have also been charged so far: former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former campaign adviser and Manafort associate Rick Gates, and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Manafort and Gates pleaded not guilty in October after being charged with 12 counts related to money laundering, tax fraud, and conspiracy against the US. Flynn pleaded guilty earlier this month to one count of lying to federal investigators about his contacts with Russians and is likely cooperating with Mueller's team.

2018 will be the year chatbot conversations get real

http://ift.tt/2zRrZYA

GUEST:

As we enter 2018, it’s clear the expectations of intelligent assistance providers and enterprise practitioners are more in balance than ever before. It’s also clear that the number of “known knowns” is growing rapidly.

Here are five examples of how and why we will learn more about the complex workings of conversational commerce in the coming year.

1. Intelligent assistants (IAs) can do a lot right out of the box

Solution providers have access to a history of FAQs, recordings, call detail records (CDRs), chat transcripts, product literature, CRM records, and even interactive voice response (IVR) scripts to inform IAs on the basic intents of customers in the top vertical categories. Even if you are not Google, Facebook, or another one of the tech giants that benefit from exposure to inconceivably large data sets, it’s possible to access quality insights about your consumers. Big data is no longer required to get started in conversational commerce.

2. Humans prove long-term value in onboarding, training, and tuning

IAs have a near immediate negative impact on operating costs and positive impact on customer satisfaction, but their ability to replace live agents and assistants is vastly overrated. To the contrary, the need to monitor and constantly tune responses to keep them relevant and satisfactory to prospects and customers is growing and will provide a source of new of jobs and permanent employment.

3. Managing true conversations comes next

Categorization? √ Understanding? √ Conversation? Nope! Some solution providers are better than others at recognizing context, promoting turn-taking, and allowing customers’ minds to wander and jump around topics, but the game board is still largely governed by statistics and branches on logic trees that can come up empty. When that happens, IAs are no better than poorly designed, frustrating IVR apps. Watch for some real advancements to correct this situation in 2018.

4. Then we can hurdle the walled gardens of #ConvComm

It’s a shame that the branded Big Four (and other heavy hitters in the tech industry) have elected to create separate and unequal “platforms” for messaging bots and voice first agents. Companies would like to see intelligent assistance infrastructure that lets them develop a service once and have it render correctly on all devices and in all modes. Instead, in the short-to-medium term, we are stuck with the same, duplicated efforts that plague mobile apps (iOS versus Android – and a few, lesser others). Separate staffs maintain the code base for Alexa skills versus Google actions, Facebook Messenger bots, and a few, lesser others.

5. Our reach will exceed our grasp

Now that we’ve tackled the “known knowns,” we can expect start-ups and stealthy entrepreneurs to emerge in 2018 to tackle “known unknowns.” They will do this by blending machine learning, natural language processing, knowledge management, and other elements of AI with the human touch. Some might even expose and exploit the “unknown knowns.” Their nature is to be determined, but there is always room for break-through technologies. At the very minimum, solutions will span the traditional lines of demarcation between customer care, marketing, user ID, and authentication and relationship management platforms.

Adoption and use of conversational commerce will accelerate in 2018. Forces are aligning for people to employ conversational technologies at home, in their cars, and in their offices. It’s up to solution providers to manage the complexity of underlying processes to keep it simple for end users and enterprises alike.

This might be the best snow shovel ever made since it's collapsible and essentially indestructible

  • The DMOS Alpha Snow Shovel collapses down to approximately 20" — its handle extends out to 63".
  • The Alpha is durable enough to survive drops, encounters with vehicles, and years of heavy use, and its saw-tooth blade chops into snow and ice with ease.
  • This is the last snow shovel you'll ever need to buy.

If you live in an area prone to regular snowfall, you probably already own a snow shovel or two. And every few years, you probably break and replace one of your snow shovels. Which is no big deal, they only cost $40 or $50, right? And it's not like you can go without, not when you have to get the driveway and sidewalk cleared and the car freed and all, right?

Well, here's a better idea: Spend $110 on one more shovel and then be done with shovel-buying for life.

For, indeed, if you believe the claim made to me by one ardent DMOS brand rep (the brand name is derived from the words "Do My Own Stuff"), then their Alpha snow shovel is "the last snow shovel you'll ever buy." What I think she meant was "the last snow shovel you'll ever need to buy," because this is America, dammit, and I'll buy another shovel any time I want even if I can't break my new DMOS Alpha — which I probably can't; not in the course of reasonable use, anyway.

DMOS shovels are fabricated from aircraft-grade aluminum. They are rated to withstand more than 3,380 pounds of force, and indeed, part of the product testing involved driving over an Alpha with a truck. And yes, it survived.

A super strong shovel that can heft countless pounds of snow and last for years is lovely. A shovel with a serrated blade edge that chops into even hard packed snow or ice is even better. A shovel that can do all that and then collapse down small enough to fit in any closet or even in the trunk of a Mazda Miata is superlative.

Screen Shot 2017 12 14 at 9.29.42 AMAmazon

In fact, the collapsible design of the DMOS Alpha (and of its slightly smaller, slightly cheaper counterpart, the Stealth) is really the best part here.

It takes the telescoping handle design that many tools use one step farther; the handle not only collapses down into itself, but it can also be disconnect from and then threaded through the blade, creating a compact package that's easy to store and also ease to carry around. It's the perfect shovel for the entrepreneurial kids who rove the neighborhood looking for driveways to clear. It's also a perfect shovel for rescue workers and the go-to choice of many Alaskan emergency response professionals.

Oh, and all DMOS shovels are made in America, by the way.

The top lessons I learned in 2017 from interviewing people like Tony Robbins and Tim Ferriss

Rich Feloni Tony Robbins FijiGraham Flanagan/Business Insider

  • As a reporter for the Strategy vertical, I've interviewed many entrepreneurs, CEOs, and academics about leadership and personal growth.
  • Sometimes I will adopt the best insights into my own life.
  • This year, I learned how to be a better colleague and how to best view my career path.

If you're reading this right now, you may have read some advice-based Strategy stories on Business Insider or other outlets — things like how to lead teams better, or why you should meditate every morning.

As someone who's written many of those, I know that they can come across as human interest stories (e.g. "This Navy SEAL wakes up at 4:30 a.m. but sorry I'm not going to do that") but other times they can really resonate with you, and you can't get a particular insight out of your head.

When I look back at this year and the interviews I did with people like life coach Tony Robbins or LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, I can see how many of the insights they shared with me did just that, and led to new routines and ways of approaching my career.

I've collected those lessons that most resonated with me and distilled them to their key takeaways.

LinkedIn founder and Greylock investor Reid Hoffman said a strong network is more valuable than a thorough career plan.

Kelly Sullivan/Getty Images

Who you know will prove to be more valuable than just your ambition, Hoffman told me in an interview for BI's podcast "Success! How I Did It."

"And so, as opposed to saying, 'I have a master plan,'" he said, you're better off focusing more energy on building "as strong a network as possible, because that's the thing that most catapults you, in terms of your capabilities, in terms of your abilities to do things."

To accomplish this, he said, you have to become a "central node" in a network, where you are adding value to the people who can move your career forward.

Life coach Tony Robbins demonstrated the power of routine.

Graham Flanagan/Business Insider

As the world's most famous life coach, Tony Robbins not only has personal clients like billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones he checks in with daily, he tours the world giving presentations and running events that regularly include 16-hour days.

He's been doing this for about 40 years now. And even though he's now 57 years old, he told me that implementing strict routines into his daily schedule have allowed him to be busier than he was when his energy came more easily.

Each morning, Robbins spends 10 minutes meditating and reflecting on what he is grateful for, and then spends 15 minutes in a compact but intense workout.

While I haven't mimicked Robbins' exact routine, I've realized there's no reason not to carve out at least 30 minutes every morning for the sake of mental and physical health.

Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio said that anyone can benefit from a degree of 'radical transparency.'

Hollis Johnson

Ray Dalio built Bridgewater Associates into the largest hedge fund in the world, with roughly $150 billion in total assets under management, but he may be more recognizable for the controversial management philosophy he's instilled into all of his employees.

After stepping down from daily management responsibilities in March, Dalio began a phase of his career in which he passed on this philosophy to the public.

I spoke with Dalio in September when he was promoting his book "Principles: Life and Work," and he said that he wants his legacy to be inspiring people to use "radical truth" and "radical transparency" in their personal and professional lives in order to make better decisions and form more honest relationships.

While I certainly don't want to work in an office where all meetings are recorded and my performance in meetings is graded in real time by my peers — as things go over at Bridgewater — I do understand the core of Dalio's desire: that playing disingenuous office politics is a slippery slope, and that honesty with your bosses and coworkers, even when it's uncomfortable, is always the better option.

10 Top Emerging Market Funds In 2017: China And India Take The Lead, Beating Wall Street

http://ift.tt/2Cszd8e

Photographer: Graham Crouch/Bloomberg

Emerging markets were in a party mode in 2017, beating Wall Street by a big margin with the top ten funds up 52% to 74%. And China and India led the field.

Emerging market funds like Guggenheim China Technology and KraneShares CSI China Internet shares gained close to 70%, near four-times the gain in the S&P500. Small Indian and Brazilian stocks fared well, too, gaining north of 50%.

Fund/ETF/Index YTD Return
1.Guggenheim China Technology (CQQQ) 74%
2.KraneShares CSI China Internet (KWEB) 69.6
3.EMQQ Emerging Markets Internet Ecommerce (EMQQ) 68.4
4. Global X Solactive China Consumer Index (CHIQ) 66.3
5. Market Vectors India Small-Cap Index (SCIF) 65.4
6. iShares MSCI India Small Cap (SMIN) 60.5
7. Powershares Golden Dragon China (PGJ) 59.9
8.Global X MSCI Argentina (ARGT) 54.4
9.Market Vectors Brazil Small-Cap 54.00
10.Columbia India Consumer (INCO) 52.32

Source: http://ift.tt/2zRyHO9

Chinese technology and Internet shares benefited from China’s recent inclusion in the MSCI emerging markets index; and from the rapid growth in China’s online economy, which is the largest and the fastest growing economy in the world.

Meanwhile, Indian small-caps have benefited from Modi’s policies, which have helped India’s economy revive in the last three years. Modi has maintained a stable political and macroeconomic environment, reformed the tax system, and fought corruption with de-monetization.

These policies have helped India’s economy outperform most emerging markets in per capita GDP growth, while bringing inflation and unemployment down. Meanwhile, Modi’s policies have improved the country’s business environment.

Will the party last into 2018? It all depends on whether the favorable factors that helped pushed these shares higher will continue into the new year. Like the ultra-low interest rate environment in developed economies, which sends capital to emerging market economies; the health of China’s Internet economy; and the continuation of emerging market economy reforms.

KraneShares Chief Investment Officer Brendan Ahern is optimistic about China’s A shares. “Following MSCI’s announcement on June 20, 2017, China A Shares will be included into their Global Standard Indexes starting in May 2018. We believe full inclusion could take up to five years.”

5 Last Minute Tax Moves To Make Now Before 2018

http://ift.tt/2CrrbMU

The New year is almost upon us, and we all know what that means. We’re going to have to deal with a lot of resolutions and new tax reform.

Now's the time to implement smart financial moves to help lower your tax bill.

So, with that in mind, here are 8 financial moves you need to make so you can take advantage of the new Tax reforms.

Charity And Donations

Making charitable donations is something you should be used to by now. Even if you’re not inclined to giving to charity, you should consider changing that mindset if you want to take advantage of the tax deductions it presents.

The tax overhaul leaves the deductions for charitable contributions unchanged, but you'd still have to itemize in order to claim it, and that's much of a high bar when you think of the nearly doubled standard deduction.

Consider Paying Off Sizable Medical Expenses

Before the year runs out, you want to consider making a move to pay off any sizable medical expenses you might have incurred.

One of the conflicts making the rounds between congressional tax proposals involves deductions for medical expenses. Whether taxpayers should continue taking medical expenses that are above income-based thresholds as an itemized deduction or not. So, if you've incurred any sizable healthcare bills, you may want to pay them off before the end of the year to enable you to qualify for this itemized deduction.

Prepay Student Loan Interest

It will be a blow to many taxpayers if the tax reform eliminates the deduction of the interest paid on student loans, because the student loan interest deduction, doesn't force payers to itemize in order to claim it.

If that happens, it would be smart to pay off any student loan you might have incurred sooner than you otherwise would have.

Settle Expenses That Qualify As Standard Deductions

It’s no news that the new tax reform package would definitely increase standard deductions, hereby, making it also increasingly less valuable for taxpayers to itemize. Charitable deductions might not be of much help if your standard deductions are higher than your total itemizable expenses.

It's a good move to have any other expenses prepaid in 2017 to enable you to claim the breaks in the year’s tax return.

Defer Income Into Next Year

If possible, defer compensation until next year.  To implement this move, however, it depends on the accounting method that you make use of in your business. If you're not sure of what to do in this case, it's best to consult a tax professional to help you decide.

Talk To A Financial Professional

You won’t see better advice than this. If you’ve yet to have someone give you professional advice on your tax situation, now’s the right time to hire someone. With the short window from the passage of the tax bill and the coming year, that doesn’t give much room for any major decisions, but it’s better early in the New Year to start making solid decisions than never.

Finish the year tax-strong and be prepared to take action in order to take advantage of the new tax reforms.  You definitely do not want 2018 to bring new tax surprises that you aren't expecting.

'Phantom Thread' star Vicky Krieps opens up about the movie's grueling shoot and working with Daniel Day-Lewis

http://ift.tt/2pIInLl

phantom thread focus Vicky Krieps in "Phantom Thread." Focus

  • Vicky Krieps plays Alma in "Phantom Thread," the muse of Daniel Day-Lewis' character, Reynolds Woodcock.
  • Krieps didn't meet Day-Lewis until their first day of shooting and said he was in character as Woodcock every day of production.
  • Being in the movie was grueling for Krieps, not because of working across from the demanding Day-Lewis, she said, but because her schedule was six days of shooting a week and her off day consisted of constant dress fittings.

Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps is a veteran of over 30 movies, but many will see her for the first time as the star of Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread" (currently playing in theaters).

Krieps plays Alma, the muse of renowned 1950s dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) who figures out an unconventional way to get him away from his work. Exploring obsessions and unconditional love, Anderson cast an incredible actress in Krieps to take on these themes opposite the all-consuming Method acting style of Day-Lewis.

Business Insider talked to Krieps about the experience of working with Day-Lewis and finding the strength to get through one of the most grueling shoots she's ever been a part of.

Jason Guerrasio: So when you got an email about auditioning for this movie you didn't realize it was a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, right? You've said at first you thought you were going out for a student film.

Vicky Krieps: That's right. It was more of me making things up out of not knowing anything. I basically got this email from an American casting agent, who I didn't know, and I certainly wasn't expecting someone from America to write to me. But I'm always interested in projects. Whatever I do, I'm interested in the color of the material, I'm not interested in who's making it. I'm more concentrated on the work. So I opened the email and scrolled to find not a script but just some text, really a monologue. So I did the lines on tape and sent it in.

Why I thought it might have been a student film was because I didn't get a script, I thought maybe it wasn't finished yet or this is for a short movie. I never thought I wasn't getting it because of secrecy of the project and that it was in fact for a movie by a famous American director. [Laughs.]

Vicky Krieps AP Vicky Krieps. AP

Guerrasio: Looking back, are you happy you didn't know who you were auditioning for? Perhaps you would have been more nervous?

Krieps: Perhaps. I think I always try to prepare the same. I don't think I would have been different. But I think what was good was I was only relating and concentrating on the work, and that turned out to work well for me.

Guerrasio: When you realized what the movie was about and who you would be playing, did you do a lot of research on the era?

Krieps: I prepared mostly on London around World War II and after the war. My character had lost her mother. This isn't in the movie, but Alma's mother is dead. So that was my backstory. And I learned as much as I could about models in the 1950s. I found on YouTube how they walked back then in fashion shows. It's very different in how models walk now. It's more human. I also learned hand sewing. But everything else I couldn't really prepare before shooting because I knew I wouldn't meet Daniel until the first day of shooting.

Guerrasio: Oh, wow.

Krieps: He requested that we don't rehearse and that we meet for the first time on the first day of shooting. So my big thing was to find a way not to be nervous. Really, for a lot of this I did the opposite of preparing.

Guerrasio: So the first scene of Alma in the movie when you meet Reynolds in the restaurant, is that the first time you met Daniel Day-Lewis?

Krieps: Yes. [Laughs.]

Phantom_Thread_241017 Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps in "Phantom Thread." Focus

Guerrasio: It's funny because Alma stumbles coming from out of the kitchen and she has this embarrassed look, it's really art imitating life.

Krieps: Exactly. I really blushed because I really tripped.

Guerrasio: Really?

Krieps: Yeah.

Guerrasio: Was it tough to act across from someone you barely knew?

Krieps: That's the thing, of course I was scared, but there was nothing I could do. I knew we would be working together and I just stayed calm as much as I could. I was really in a meditative state of emptiness and forget everything I was researching for the character and just reacted to him. Working with him was rather wonderful. Because of how he works, I could really fall into this world of Reynolds Woodcock. I just concentrated on the moment. Each scene in the movie I was just in the moment. Just reacting to the person across from me.

Guerrasio: Can you say you even met Daniel while shooting this movie?

Krieps: No.

Guerrasio: So you were with Reynolds Woodcock.

Krieps: Exactly. I never met Daniel on set until we finished.

Guerrasio: So, as you said, you don't overthink how he wants to work. This is the job. You just react.

Krieps: You go with it. I could only go with it.

phantom thread 2 focus features Vicky Krieps said she didn't actually meet Day-Lewis until after shooting. During production he was always in character. Focus Features

Guerrasio: The way he worked, did that bring you deeper into the Alma character than you would have if you worked across a different actor?

Krieps: I think the way I work is similar to how Daniel works, I just don't call it Method acting. I don't have the time and money to prepare the way he does. I have more projects to work on in a year, so it's impossible for me to do it that way. But I definitely have the same dedication and I'm crazy enough to invent worlds around me. It becomes a reality and you are involved in what you invented.

Guerrasio: American audiences don't know you as well as other parts of the world, but you've worked a lot in your career. Compare this job to what you've done in the past. Is this the most unusual production you've ever been on because of the way Daniel works?

Krieps: It definitely has been the most intense work I've ever done. It was also the only one where I was really struggling with my strength. In the middle of making this I said to myself, "Oh my god, I can't see the end." I felt that I would never get to it. "How can I find more strength in me to continue?" Because it was 16-hour days sometimes. We worked every day, except for Sundays. But on Sundays I had fittings of all the dresses that were made for me. It was endless fittings. So strength was the biggest challenge for me on this.

Guerrasio: With all that said, if Paul called tomorrow and said "I just wrote a part for you in my next movie," do you say yes?

Krieps: Yes. [Laughs.]

Guerrasio: It's worth the pain, so to speak.

Krieps: Absolutely. In a second I would do it again.

Guerrasio: A lot of the talk around this movie is that Daniel says it's his final movie. What are your thoughts? Do you think he's really quitting acting?

Krieps: I respect him enough to believe that if he says so then he will. But I also respect him enough to leave the door open if he wants to change his mind. If he's determined to stop I understand. But if this is an emotional reaction and he changes his mind I would love that. I would be happy if he continued to be an actor. I just want him to get what he wants.

7 Tools to Streamline Your Business Operations

http://ift.tt/2lqR9ZF

When you're running your own business, every minute is valuable. You can't afford to waste any time. But with so much on your plate and limited hours in the day, how do you make sure everything gets done - and done right?

The success of your business depends on your business operations. In his autobiography, "Iacocca," business leader Lee Iacocca writes, "In the end, all business operations can be reduced to three words: people, product, and profits." You need to keep all three organized and running smoothly for your business to operate effectively.

With the help of a few tools and technologies, it's easier than ever to run your business with efficiency. And with operations under control and moving things along, you'll be able to spend more time focusing on running your business - and boosting your bottom line.

Here are the seven tools you need to improve your business operations.

1. Trello

In her book, "The Outstanding Organization," business consultant Karen Martin writes, "Chaos is the enemy of any organization that strives to be outstanding." To combat that chaos, a project management tool such as Trello is necessary.

Trello allows you to organize and manage an entire project from start to finish. You create cards for each task needed and assign those cards to the task owner. You can assign deadlines, add comments and track progress as each card moves through to completion.

2. Slack

You could have a million business operations tools, but without open communication among your team, you're going to have problems. Slack offers a user-friendly online chat that helps teams stay in contact all day - no matter where they are.

In Slack, you can create conversation threads on a specific topic, so when you're working on a project, all the communication about that project will be in one place. This way, it's easy to collaborate and make decisions quickly.

3. PandaDoc

Paperwork is a tedious part of business, and with so much going digital, it's a hassle to still rely on paper for things like contracts, proposals and quotes. By using a document management software like PandaDoc, you won't need to print and scan in documents. Instead, everything is handled digitally.

The tool allows you to create, send and track documents - all in one place. It also has the option of e-signatures. With everything streamlined in one tool, the time you spend on documents is greatly reduced, freeing you up for other important business tasks.

4. Freshbooks

According to a survey by the National Association of Small Businesses, the number one challenge of running a business is economic uncertainty. Managing finances can be stressful, especially if you're doing it all on your own.

Freshbooks offers an easy and simplified system for managing your finances. You can track your expenses, send invoices and manage your books with minimal effort. Accounting is fast and secure, giving you more time to devote to other areas of your business.

5. ZenDesk

Customer service is a hot topic for businesses lately, and those that do it well are seeing abundant benefits. On Twitter, customer service expert Shep Hyken writes, "Make every interaction count, even the small ones. They are all relevant."

ZenDesk is a help desk solution that will ensure your customers are satisfied with each interaction with your business. The tool allows you to connect with customers from anywhere - email, social, chat and phone - all from one dashboard.

6. Calendly

As the head of your business, your schedule is probably pretty packed. So scheduling any new meetings or phone calls in your already-busy schedule can be a pain. On his blog, Seth Godin writes, "You don't need more time. You just need to decide."

Calendly makes scheduling meetings and appointments easy by allowing you to coordinate schedules and avoid going back and forth over email trying to find a time that works.

7. MailChimp

When you're looking to send a mass email, your typical email service provider, such as Gmail or Outlook, can only do so much. You need a marketing automation tool like MailChimp to better connect with your email list.

MailChimp allows you to create professional-looking emails, send them to your contacts and track your campaigns. You can also set up automated emails, which will save you the hassle of remembering to send. You just create and organize the campaign once, and MailChimp does the rest. Then, you can come back and gather data on how successful the campaign was.

The Weirdest Pitches Of 2017 That I Can Remember, Ranked

Critics seem to agree that humanity's surging, litter-prone sea of written content broke its high water mark this year, and certainly no one using the web--nor any algorithm therein--escaped its crashing spray.

Which pieces of op-ed driftwood or brand garbage bobbed to the surface in 2017 varied widely for each of us, of course. As a Forbes Tech writer with a few beats and several emailed cold-pitches per day, I saw a rich array of kinda-sorta-relevant or totally inexplicable gadget promos and double speak wash up in my inbox.

In honor of the end of a tumultuous and decidedly frothy year, then, the following are the 11 weirdest, worst, and most worrying pitches I received in 2017 and could still manage to dredge up and rank at the end of it: in their own ways, all such accomplished and/or baffling pieces of flotsam that I either shared them with a friend (sorry Jenn) or just could never throw them out.

All emailed content abridged and annotated for anonymity, and for effect.

12. RE: Slash from Guns N’ Roses Turns Into A Pumpkin In Amazing Halloween Video

Well, he might have had it coming, honestly. But what do you expect me to do about it?

LOS ANGELES, OCT 30 -- Just in time for Halloween, Slash has been immortalized as a pumpkin, and the likeness, let alone the craftsmanship has to be seen to be believed. Seen here, the Slash-o’-lantern, which was created by AXS and professional pumpkin carver John Neill (known as the "Pumpkin Guru"), perfectly captured the lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses iconic look—complete with his famous hat and hair. The process took a total of 16 hours and was created to celebrate Halloween, along with the upcoming concerts on the legendary rock band's tour. The fun, timelapse video turns the hours of work into 60 seconds.

"With the hat, glasses, nose ring and hair, there are few rockers more iconic and it was kick to carve Slash," said Jon Neill, a world-renowned champion carver celebrity seen on Food Network, Snickers Halloween Commercial, Nickelodeon and more. "It wasn't without it's challenges, and it actually ended up being two pumpkins overall — one for his face and one for his hat. But fair to say it was a rockin' likeness, easily one of my favorite of the season to carve."

10. RE: App Delivers Surprise Christmas Messages from Loved Ones who have Passed Away!

(Screenshot via SwonSong)

"Could an app help those who have been bereaved during the upcoming Christmas holidays?"

Unless they and their loved ones are thinking about beyond-the-grave arrangements at this particular time (like me, now) only as regards holidays that are still a ways off, or the immediately unwell person adores new apps, I expect not, regretfully.

I'm still on the fence about digital or snail mail posthumous delivery services, frankly, not least because many haven't stuck around. I'd think celebrities would have their own, exclusive version of this, too, or just lawyers and such. But to each their own.

As a very difficult time of year for anybody who has lost a loved one, SwonSong is offering people comfort in the form of surprise digital messages set to be delivered on Christmas Day.

SwonSong stores and sends posthumous letters, emails, audio and video messages which can help those affected cope with the distressing experience of losing a loved one. A selection of messages can be stored until a certain date, allowing posthumous messages to be delivered on birthdays, anniversaries and special family occasions such as Christmas.

Ian Lamonby, Operations Director and Co-owner of SwonSong, says, “We know that anyone who has been bereaved dreads Christmastime, as a loved one’s absence is felt more than ever when the family celebrations are incomplete. What SwonSong offers is a chance for the person who has passed away to offer Christmas wishes to their family, which can be extremely comforting. Receiving any kind of message from a loved one who is no longer with us can be the best surprise Christmas present you’ve ever received.”

Users can record multiple farewell messages, to be sent to each member of the family; spouse, parents, siblings, children and close friends. Users can choose the exact date, time and delivery of each message. The messages are uploaded to the secure SwonSong server, where they may sit for five or fifty-five years, until a designated Notifier confirms the user’s passing and activates message release.

[Messages] can be composed in email format, or they can be sent as real letters, professionally printed onto A4 paper and posted worldwide, for those who might not have the ability to receive digital messages. Video clips are extremely popular and can be watched as a family, for example around the table before Christmas dinner.

9. RE: Innovating the Birthday Candle: Moms Uncover Party Solutions through Technology and Design

The product is Wishful Wicks (not to be confused with Wishful Wicks, it seems): that is, "patented, battery-operated birthday cake toppers that you can actually 'blow out.' Thus eliminating dangerous situation with lit birthday candles, and creating a fun gadget for every birthday cake."

Outside of pure-oxygen atmospheres, I admittedly think of traditional, low-tech, typically non-flammable birthday cakes as already being pretty safe and fun. And one of few remaining sources of joy, for what it's worth, that don't require batteries--which, unlike birthday cakes or celebrants, will likely stick around on this planet for generations.

8. RE: Xchime is now 400% Funded and Poised to Become the Leader in Video Doorbell Technologies with their Unique Set of Features

Already funded, captures the spaces outside our homes on camera, lukewarmly reviewed by another site. And noted.

Home security and automation just got a bit smarter today with the launch of Xchime's Indiegogo campaign. With video doorbells being a key part of any home safety setup, Xchime aims to broaden the usefulness by adding convenience and security features such as a garage door opener and smart light bulb integration. The campaign has been extended until the end of July 2017, Xchime is now over 400% funded with first units expected to ship quickly in August 2017.

"While there are a number of smart doorbells on the market, the Xchime claims to differentiate itself with a compendium of features and a more accessible price point." say, Lulu Chang of Digital Trends

Expand Beyond the Front Door: Garages are one of the entry points for criminals, typically when home owners forget to (completely) close the garage door. With an additional Xchime unit set up in the garage, instantly view the status of your garage door from your mobile device.

7. RE: TREKKIES SCRAMBLE TO GET THE FIRST TOOTHBRUSH IN SPACE

Did I miss a (space) memo?

It was a series of world firsts for Star Trek Discovery’s fifth episode; not only featuring the first openly gay relationship in Trek history, but it was also the first time the ‘f-bomb’ was dropped - AND the first time ever there was a toothbrushing scene - enter the FOREO ISSA!

In the end scene Lt. Paul Stamets played by Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz’s character, Dr Hugh Colber are seen enjoying a catch up over their dental hygiene, with matching cute Star Fleet pyjamas - a scenario most couples across the galaxy can resonate with.

Speaking to Variety Kapp describes the black silicone toothbrush used by his character as “some kind of high-end electric toothbrush that probably has some kind of laser beam or something, so you literally just have to pass them over your teeth. You don’t have to scrub. They don’t really make a noise and you don’t need toothpaste.”

Whilst Kapp’s comments aren’t far from the truth, the ISSAs don’t harbour laser beams and swedish beauty brand FOREO highly recommends you use toothpaste, but true to the quote - they are innovative and high-end electrical toothbrushes combining Sonic Pulse Technology and a revolutionary silicone design for brushing like no other - probably the best choice for the U.S.S. Discovery.

6. RE: The 'Tinder Whisperer' Shares Her Tips

Not sure if I should be more put out on behalf of 'genuine' users who are contacted by or competing with this expert impersonator, love itself, or the state of my own billable hours.

The married UWS mom of 2 spends hours each day swiping, searching, and engaging in the flirty conversations her elite roster is too busy (or too unlucky in love) to have themselves, then schedules first dates on their behalf. The former psychotherapist who procured more than 1,000 dates on behalf of her clients this year alone would love the opportunity to dish on the following and more:

* 3 reasons NOT to bring your new 'bae' home for the holidays

* The #1 mistake people make on their dating profiles

* Charging $2k per month as a 'dating ghostwriter'

* Why you should consider outsourcing your love life

5. RE: Which Cities Were Naughty This Year

Ashley Madison users have already had a rough year, privacy wise (and presumably their spouses, too), so a year-end infographic on where they're cheating the hardest seemed a little, I dunno, Grinchy. And just sad.

Entering the holiday season, Ashley Madison (a married dating website) looked at which U.S cities have been having a nice time being naughty in 2017. Today, they revealed the top ten U.S. cities for new members on the notorious website for cheaters.

According to the data, in first place is Los Angeles with a 47% increase in new member accounts in 2017 on AshleyMadison.com. New York takes second with a 40% increase in signups, and Washington with a 34% increase. But, it doesn’t stop there—an increase in naughty play ranges from coast-to-coast revealing that stepping out of a marriage isn’t an isolated occurrence.

4. RE: Apple TV Launches Plastic Surgery On Demand

(Credit: Screenshot via the App Store)

Of course it does.

Thank you, waning stigmas, wherever you are!

The Plastic Surgery Network has launched on Apple TV bringing Plastic Surgery and Non-Invasive procedures into your living room without ever having to go a doctor's office.

The Plastic Surgery industry is over $15 billion per year as the stigma for cosmetic procedures has waned. With this new app featured on the APPLE TV app store, you can view the "virtual body" by clicking the area of interest as it will aggregate video content straight from aesthetic providers. You also can check out their reviews as its essentially "Netflix meets Yelp" according to Dr. Gordon Kaplan one of the members of the network.

The APP was featured in Forbes: Click Here for FORBES article

3. RE: Lalafo

If I had lots of stuff and a desire to frequently sell it and buy more, then hey: maybe this would be attractive.

But as is, I'm scared. Skeptical and scared.

When the Lalafo computer vision engine receives an image it instantly knows what kind of product it contains, its category, brand, year of manufacturing, colour, shape and many other characteristics of the item. By the end of 2017, the Lalafo computer vision engine will be able to “see” all possible characteristics of virtually all products in the world based on their visual features.

Lalafo can extract a lot of information just from a single image. Then analyse and compare it, suggest a price and show the listing to people who are the most likely to be interested in it.

By using machine learning and analysing multiple data sources for each user, Lalafo wants to alert you when you stopped using that cool brown bag or chic green jacket seen in your selfies. Lalafo wants to help you remember what you have and make suggestions for what you may want to sell next, how much money you could make and how many people would like to buy it.

2. RE: "Cock Rings: The sexy pill-free tool to maintain arousal"

I've never heard of "arousal rings," but I've definitely heard of cock rings, as well as the negative impacts that stigmatizing erectile dysfunction creates in life, relationships, and the bedroom.

While the topic “ED” is much to be avoided in the bedroom, we all know that the occasional flaccid moment during sex is completely normal—could be from stress, could be from sleepiness, maybe even anxiety—but it by no means equates to erectile dysfunction.

A helpful pill-free tool that helps with this is cock rings, or arousal rings if you prefer a softer term. No pun intended.

Nor avoided?

While it may sound a bit strange at first, these soft silicone rings maintain arousal and erection during sex. So once you get it up, it stays up, just by placing at the base of the penis and balls.

For guys, this is a great to keep up their stride, and for their partners, they don’t have to worry about lying there waiting for the guy to get it together.

Steve Callow, Founder of Arousal Rings brand, Perfect Fit, has coined the “losing momentum” experience as Sexual Distraction or SD for short.

1. RE: Nation’s Prominent Tech Leaders Unite to Empower Gig & Sharing Entrepreneurs

Last and definitely least in 2017, in my book, is SAVANT: a platform with a fundamentally bizarre, misappropriated but increasingly common term, launched by a trio of presumably well-to-do tech guys, and which seemingly couldn't detect the national zeitgeist if they were locked in a closet together.

It's one thing to recognize that the 'gig economy' has had an enormous impact in the past several years--namely, inflicted upon our wages, worker protections, national stress levels, and income inequality in this country and around the world.

It is another thing to carefully consistent this tech-created state of affairs and come up with a useful solution that helps gig workers; inarguably, that solution is not "more middle men to skim off their piece!"

But it's really, truly something when the man behind the necessarily wage-stagnating platform fiverr, one of the giggiest schemes out there, wants to provide--in all his net-worth-evinced wisdom--a way to better manage our desperately fragmented, low-paid, tragically solitary workloads in exchange for a few million small fees, and presumably as much of our data as can easily be vacuumed up.

In general, I think someone who isn't forced to constantly debate and reassess the value of their time, skills, and work in relation to how much they need or can afford to lose $5 at any given time--as every worker on fiverr does, and I do, every day--shouldn't give advice on how to survive this process.

That piece of insight, meanwhile, is shared freely, and doesn't take a genius to work out.

As one former Facebook exec has thankfully pointed out this year, too, the fact remains that hard work, tech success, personal wealth, and genius actually have little to no overlap.

So, better luck next year, everyone. And keep those (thoughtful) innovations coming.

Hailing from Chicago’s booming innovation ecosystem, three of the Nation’s prominent tech leaders have joined forces to create a startup that will forever change the sharing and gig economy (also known as the “platform economy”) ... the first and only software dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs in the new platform economy with central control of their business.

With currently over 12 million platform entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Europe (Uber drivers, Airbnb hosts, Turo renters, etc.), this segment of the economy is projected to grow by over 800 percent to exceed $325 billion by 2025, according to the Brookings Institution ... and [SAVANT's founders are] motivated by their determination to empower these entrepreneurs to thrive and retain more of their hard-earned money.

“The sharing and gig workforce is the future of the dwindling middle class,” explains Randolph, CEO of SAVANT. “The platform economy provides individuals from all walks of life the opportunity to achieve financial independence as entrepreneurs, while also enabling them to choose how and when they work. Flexible work hours are highly valued by today’s workforce, providing more time with family.”

“With simple, real-time tax and finance automation, real-time listing and gig management, business optimization and comprehensive reporting, SAVANT users will be empowered to increase profits, regain control of their finances, and improve customer service,” explains Arshad. “These new entrepreneurs need a simple and automated financial management tool, and that is exactly what we have created.”

With easy tax and finance automation, real-time listing and gig management, business optimization, and comprehensive reporting, SAVANT users are empowered to increase profits, regain control of their money, reclaim their free-time and improve customer service.

We understand the unique challenges and uncertainty faced by renters, drivers, and gigsters of this newly emerging economy as past and current contributors. This transformative ecosystem is rapidly growing into one of the largest pillars of the global economy. SAVANT’s collective experience with Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, HomeAway, Turo, Getaround and beyond has enabled us to identify and solve these challenges by developing powerful tools that empower users to not only survive, but truly thrive.

How to Be More Productive in 2018

http://ift.tt/2BYfGvq

Holding her laptop, journal and pen, and paper calendar, Janice (not her real name) stopped long enough to field a question from one of her teammates. With an eye on the clock and her body positioned to get away to her next meeting quickly, Janice looked frazzled. Her endless meetings and a list of ideas and to-dos swirling in her head not only distracted her but were overwhelming her.

To be productive at work takes as much effort as doing the work. Janice, like so many other employees, struggles to find moments of time to make meaningful progress in her assignments. In one study, 57 percent of employees and managers struggled to manage information, schedules, and expectations. This does not optimize companies and its people for high levels of success or progress. What's worse, overwhelmed employees are more likely to burnout.

While an organizational culture shift is a key to solving the growing problem of overwhelmed and underperforming employees, you can take action today. To be more productive in 2018, you can leverage the following tips. The tips are categorized by productivity hacks and activities that help you develop a disciplined approach to getting work done.

Always Maintain a Wellness Focus

Getting things done does not rely only on productivity habits like list making and planning. If you are not taking care of your mind and body, overcoming feeling overwhelmed will help you underperform.

Instead, develop a few habits that help you recharge throughout the day. Here are a few high-value suggestions:

  • Get Plenty of Sleep: Arianna Huffington advocates that "the myth of burning out is the necessary price for accomplishment and success" is dangerous. In Huffington's press kit for her recent book, The Sleep Revolution, she cites research from the Great British Sleep Survey that shows "sleep-deprived people are seven times more likely to experience helplessness and five times more likely to feel lonely."
  • Meditate During the Day: Apps like Headspace or 10% Happier can be used for quick meditation sessions that can last two minutes, five minutes, or longer. Meditation helps you recharge and come back to work with higher levels of energy.

Constantly Create and Seek Clarity

Reduce confusion or indecision over what to work on by ruthlessly creating clarity. I define clarity as knowing what the company's top priorities are, what that means for your team, and for you. It also includes understanding and setting the goals, clarifying expectations, and building short feedback-loops on performance throughout the month.

Minimize the cognitive distractions from not knowing what is most important. Additionally, manage frustrations that come from different understandings about priorities, goals, and expectations by continually revisiting them. You can do this for yourself and your team.

Develop and Follow Daily Rituals

Productivity masters like Tim Ferris and Michael Hyatt believe daily rituals are crucial to progress and success. Rituals are made up of daily activities that keep you focused on what matters most. They help you maintain a laser-sharp focus on the activities that will help you accomplish your goals. Without daily rituals, you can be more susceptible to distractions. Here are four ritual categories I build into each day. I included some sample tasks, too.

  • Morning Ritual: This is my "me time." I meditate for 20 minutes. I journal for 10 minutes, reflecting on ideas and listing people and things for which I'm grateful.
  • Work Start Ritual: This ritual positions me to make smart choices for the day. It includes writing down my top three priorities for the day, reviewing my calendar, reading (again) my master goal and the reason it is important to me. I also spend time updating my progress on personal and professional goals.
  • Work End Ritual: End the day the same way every time. Work end rituals are intended to prepare you for the next day and to reduce surprises. My ritual for the end of the day includes re-reading my master goal and reasons for achieving it. I also plan the next day.
  • Nightly Ritual: I start the day focusing on me, and I end the day the same way. I write down, again, three things for which I'm grateful. I take my nightly medicine. I read a fiction book to help me unwind before going to bed.

Plan for All Roles in Your Life

Plan for and integrate into your week and month activities and tasks in the various roles in your life. Wharton professor Stewart Friedman identifies three skill categories in his book, Leading the Life You Want, that help you integrate work and the rest of life into a fulfilling one.

  • Skills for Being Real: Friedman defines being real as "to act with authenticity by clarifying what's important to you."
  • Skills for Being Whole: These are skills that support acting with integrity.
  • Skills for Being Innovative: These are skills to help you "act with creativity and courage in continually experimenting with how things get done."

Friedman's book is based on his massively popular course that the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. I strongly encourage you to pick up Leading the Life You Want to see the full set of skills for each of the three categories listed above.

Feeling productive is essential to maintaining progress and a positive perception of the value you bring to the company and your team. It is always timely to simplify the way you work, get more done, and experience greater fulfillment in your life.
