3 Ways Social Entrepreneurs Can Influence Workplace Culture This Year

I'll never forget a conversation I had with my lawyer after establishing my first nonprofit organization: "One day someone will replace you, and that's not always a bad thing," he said.

It was hard to hear at first, but he was right. And in the time that has followed that conversation, I've come to understand more that if you've done anything right in your organization, it should be healthy enough to live on years after you transition out of it – and it all starts with culture.

Setting a healthy culture today will keep you focused on the long-term health of your organization, not just your place in it. So whether you're transitioning out or just getting started, here are three ways to influence your company culture this year:

  1. Create a culture that cares.

Word gets around. If your company doesn't care for the people that fuel your organization every day, you'll have a hard time retaining your workforce. Start small – examine the demands your people are facing, whether it's travel, long hours, or emotionally taxing work. Ask what your people need and think through how you can show them you care. It might be a policy, bonus or new workplace mental health program, but it could even be as simple as an email acknowledging a job well done.As you work to create a culture that cares, tune into the needs of your people and make it a priority to meet them.

  2. Create a culture that lasts.

Don't implement a fad policy or program – people will sense if you're being disingenuous. A culture that lasts is rooted in vision and genuine interest, in your work, your people and the purpose behind your organization. You'll only establish a healthy culture that can live on after you leave if you're genuine about it right now. If you don't understand the value of focusing on your culture – or if you're having a difficult time course correcting or establishing a healthy one, find a mentor or look into the cultures of your favorite organizations. Learn from others and take what aligns with your vision. As you work to create a culture that lasts, set your sights on the legacy you leave. Make sure your workplace aligns with why you started the organization in the first place, and make sure your people stay rooted in that vision.

  3. Create a culture that cultivates.

The best workplaces are those where leaders lift others up. If you're after ego or praise, leadership isn't for you. Strive to create an environment where new ideas flourish and the people who present those ideas are empowered with opportunity. In the social impact space especially, it's easy to be strapped for time, resources and manpower. If one of your people has an idea or the ambition to try something new, provide opportunities for them to do so. There may come a day where you need to leave the organization, and who better to take your place than someone who's understood the vision from the beginning and has presented new ideas, passion and ambition. As you work to create a culture that cultivates, empower your people so they strive to become their best. Great leaders are the footstool to others' success, and an attitude of humility and empowerment will transform the way you live and lead.

Have the courage to accept your organization might outlive your leadership for it – and that's something to strive for.

In the meantime, do good work for the people you serve, and take care of those serving your people. A healthy culture paves the way for innovation, trust and collaboration, where new ideas can flourish and your people will thrive.
