Learn all about who you are with the $59 23andMe DNA test kit https://ift.tt/2HEbY05 The 23andMe at-home Ancestry DNA test is down to $59 on Amazon. It normally sells for $99, but 23andMe is currently taking 30% off for a limited time. Another option is to upgrade to the 23andMe Health + Ancestry personal genetic service for $129. That's down from a price around $199 and just $10 above its lowest price ever. The first kit is strictly DNA testing. It'll tell you all about your family's history, your ethnic background, and maybe reveal some interesting facts about yourself you never knew. You'll also be able to connect with relatives based on your DNA from all around the world. If you want to, you'll be able to upgrade to the health screening later but it will cost extra. The second, more expensive option is the one that adds health screening. It will tell you everything your DNA tells them about your health, your traits, and what you might be at risk for. UK to get self-driving buses and taxis by 2021 https://ift.tt/2TImJBA The UK won't sit idly by while the US, Japan and China put self-driving vehicles on their roads. The country's government has announced an ambitious driverless public transport plan for 2021, including autonomous buses in Scotland and self-driving taxis in several of London's boroughs, with state funding to the tune of £25 million ($33 million). Scotland's first self-driving buses -- which could provide up to 10,000 journeys a week between Fife and Edinburgh across the Forth Bridge -- will get £4.35m ($5.6 million) of those funds. Initially, the single-decker buses will require a human driver to be present at all times, with unmanned tests limited to the depot. The autonomous buses will be able to carry up to 42 passengers for the 14-mile journey and will operate every 20 minutes, according to the BBC. In London, private cab company Addison Lee will receive state backing to expand its autonomous taxi trials in Greenwich to cover the entirety of the borough by 2021. It's currently working with self-driving software specialist Oxbotica to digitally map public roads in the capital. The move sees it taking on rival Uber, which has resumed self-driving car tests in the US (but only in manual mode) after temporarily halting them following a fatal accident in Tempe, Arizona earlier this year. Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover is also prepping a "premium mobility service" in London using six driverless Discovery cars. Details on the venture are scarce, but the auto-maker has already started semi-autonomous parking trials on the capital's public roads. Those tests form part of the UK's Autodrive research projects, which also include the Lutz Pathfinder pod and partnerships with Ford and Tata. The country also finalized the Vehicle Technology and Aviation Bill in 2017 with guidelines on autonomous car insurance and provisions for electric vehicle charging points. DJI makes its Ronin S gimbal more useful with 9 new accessories https://ift.tt/2znBlhu We called DJI's DSLR and mirrorless Ronin S gimbal "essential YouTube equipment," and it just got even more so with nine new accessories. The most interesting for filmmakers is the $169 Focus Motor for manual focus lenses. It consists of a motor, rod mount set and focus gear strip that can handle a wide variety of lens diameters. Once attached and connected to the Ronin-S, you can can use the existing the $59 Focus Wheel to adjust manual focus with .02 degrees of accuracy. If you'd rather not use your smartphone to control the Ronin S, DJI has introduced the $129 Command Unit that attaches to the side. It has a small screen that lets you quickly change settings like motor controls and operations. There's also a new $69 External GPS Module that improves stability when you do quick moves that rapidly accelerate the gimbal. It also helps keep the horizon line horizontal. Gallery: DJI Ronin S gimbal new accessories | 17 PhotosIf you want to go beyond handheld shooting for more complex shots, the $169 Universal Mount lets you use the Ronin S with camera control systems, cables and jibs, or mount it to a car. It can also power the gimbal using a separate dual battery mount. You can also increase battery life using the new $99 BG37 Grip that packs a 12 hour rated 2400 mAh battery. Other accessories, like the $49 Top HotShoe bracket and extended lens support give you new ways to mount various cameras and lenses. The US is warning other countries against using Huawei's 5G tech https://ift.tt/2P2gt4i Back in October, American politicians asked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider Huawei's involvement in his country's 5G plans. Turns out Canada isn't the only US ally the government has warned against using the Chinese tech giant's products. According to The Wall Street Journal, the government has reached out to Germany, Japan, Italy and other friendly countries, particularly those where the US has military bases. US officials apparently talked to those countries' representatives, telling them about what they see as cybersecurity risks if they use Huawei-made components to build their 5G infrastructure. Huawei has fallen out of favor with the US government after a congressional report from 2012 called it a national security threat out of concerns that the Chinese government could compel the company to give it access to sensitive data. Just before this year's midterm elections, the country even banned government personnel from using Huawei and ZTE devices. WSJ says US officials briefed representatives from Germany, Japan and Italy in an effort to dissuade both government and commercially operated networks from using Huawei (and ZTE) components. In addition to discussing the possibility of Beijing forcing the company to comply with requests for data access, the authorities reportedly stressed 5G's susceptibility to cyberattacks and espionage, as well. See, current cell towers are separate from their network's "core" systems in charge of transferring voice and data traffic. 5G cell towers, however, will have hardware capable of doing some tasks currently accomplished by core systems. While US military bases have satellites and telecommunications networks of their own, they're only used for sensitive communications and most of the military's voice and data traffic still go through commercial networks. An official told the publication:
It remains to be seen whether the countries decide to take the US government's advice and ban Huawei like Australia already did. Huawei is the leading 5G equipment supplier, after all, and offers customizable products at prices lower than its rivals'. Brain implant lets paralyzed people turn thoughts into text https://ift.tt/2Bvd6PR Three people paralyzed from the neck down have been able to use unmodified computer tablets to text friends, browse the internet and stream music, thanks to an electrode array system called BrainGate2. The findings could have a major impact on the lives of those affected by neurologic disease, injury, or limb loss. The system uses an array of micro-electrodes implanted into the brain which decode, in real time, the neural signals associated with the intention to move a limb. The three people involved in the trial had electrode grids implanted over part of their motor cortex -- the area of the brain that helps control movement -- which picked up neural activity indicating they were thinking about moving a cursor on the screen. Those patterns were then sent to a virtual mouse that was wirelessly paired to the tablet. Using only their intentions, the participants were able to perform a range of common digital tasks including web browsing and sending email. One participant ordered groceries online and played a digital piano. "The tablet became second nature to me, very intuitive," she told the researchers when asked about her experience, according to the study. The system even allowed two of the participants to chat with each other in real time. Of course, brain-computer interface technology has been around for a few years now. What's remarkable about this study, though, is that BrainGate2 allows users to navigate completely unmodified, off-the-shelf devices, with no special features or modifications. And a few basic tweaks could make the system even more accessible to users. According to the study report, "Participants navigated the user interface comfortably despite not having access to all of the gestures commonly used on a tablet (e.g., click and drag, multitouch). This precluded certain functions such as scrolling up and down on the tablet web browser. Some of these limitations would have been overcome by enabling accessibility features found in the Android OS or third-party programs. Additionally, modifying the Android OS keyboard layout as we have done in prior reports would have likely increased typing rates." Nonetheless, the findings demonstrate how communication, mobility and independence can be partially restored to those with otherwise limited control over their environment, and without the need for expensive or specialist equipment -- a major development that will have a hugely positive impact on the lives of people around the world.
